I've fished the Little Vermillion river or what we call the creek for 40 years and over a 15 mile stretch. It's faboulous for Smallmouth bass and I've caught 4 pounders from here. The creek also contains bluegill, catfish, pickerel, bullhead, carp, sheephead, suckers, creek chub, and shad. You'll also find a variety of turtles and snakes, along with frogs and crayfish which you can use for bait. Beware of poison ivy. The creek is dependant on rain to maintain depth and good fishing. Start your boat tour at the Visitor Center where you purchase very reasonably priced tickets. Walk across the canal bridge and down some steps to the boat. You can also drive to the parking lot. First is short, entertaining and informative talk about mules and those who pull the canal boat. On board the boat, the narrator provides a history of the Illinois and Michigan Canal as you slowly glide a short distance on a restored section of the canal. The mule actually pulls the boat at maybe 2 miles/hour. The whole tour takes a bit over an hour. The canal was a very important link for transportation of goods between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River from about 1850 to 1930. The whole tour is fun and informative. See more..

The park complex contains a dog park, which is the highlight of the park. The complex also contains a pond, football fields, a children's park and a baseball field. My only complaint is they should have kept two or three of the large trees inside the fenced areas for the dogs. See more..

Hiking Trails

As part of our bike trip crossing Illinois from the Indiana border to the Mississippi River, we rode our bikes on the I&M trail from Joliet to LaSalle. It was great....picturesque, historic, and mostly well maintained. There are many access points along the way with parking, some with water fountains, some with bathroom facilities. I've been on the trail several times since and have always enjoyed the experiences. It's quiet and relatively safe, though I'd suggest travelling in a group just because it can be lonely. We should be proud this trail is available to us. See more..

This WAS a great local little bar with friendly bartenders and some really solid drink selections, impressive beer selection and some quality local entertainment. Something happened - a few of us who used to be regulars are still baffled as to what that was - the regular bartenders left and the drink prices went sky-high. The place is great but the unbearably high prices for the same drinks that are being mixed and poured at other corner bars in La Salle and Peru for 1/4 of the price make the "new" Machelle's a fail. Sad to see it happen, this was a great, friendly little bar. See more..
