This was so awesome. After all these years you can still see the ruts from thousands of wagons that passed through this place. You can walk in the ruts and imagine how it would be. This place is free to visit and is a must see for anyone interested in the history of the Oregon Trail! See more..
  2. 4.5 Guernsey State Park (74 reviews)
    - Great CCC historical sites
    State Parks
    Guernsey State Park image
Guernsey State Park provides seven campgrounds. Five are around the lake. All campgrounds include comfort stations, picnic tables, fire grills and drinking water. We also have a trailer dump station located at the south entrance to Guernsey State Park. This park provides the finest examples of Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) work in the Rocky Mountain area. Built by the CCC, the Guernsey Museum, the Castle and Brimmer Point are available to explore. The museum is perched on a high cliff, overlooking the water. The building itself is made of hand hewn timbers and hand forged iron. The roof is framed with the timbers and covered with split cedar shakes, and the floors were formed by pieces of smooth flagstone. The Castle, with its giant fireplace and winding steps, leads to an observation area for a spectacular view of the park.An extensive network of trails was originally planned and partially built during the operation of the CCC camps. Ever since that time hiking and trail use has been a major feature at Guernsey State Park. Approximately ten miles of CCC trails have been restored on the park. Starting point for the trail system is at the Brimmer Point turnoff. The trail system consists of several loops which provide a variety of scenic views of the park, reservoir and the dam. Most of the trails are moderately physically demanding. The Oregon Trail was one of the primary routes used by the immigrants' westward migration across the plains from 1841 to 1869. Today, in many parts of Wyoming, remnants of The Oregon Trail can still be seen. Some of the best examples are the "ruts"; located just 1/2 mile south of the town of Guernsey, off Highway 26.Register Cliff located two miles southeast of Guernsey provided travelers with a "chalkboard" where they placed their names for those who followed. The landmark still remains much the way it looked to pioneers on wagon trains journeying West. See more..
  3. 4.0 Register Cliffs (123 reviews)
    - Fun To Find Mid-1800s Engravings
    Geologic Formations
    Register Cliffs image
It is fun to walk along the cliff to read the different engravings people did back in the mid-1800s. You can see the difference in the "font" people carved their names and dates in. Much of the cliff was fenced off to stop people from carving their names in all the way up to present day. See more..

Guernsey Visitor's Center and Museum image
The kids loved this place! The lady running it had a listing of all the original names that were on Register Cliff, including that of our ancestors and boasts a small museum as well as post cards and such for the Guernsey Oregon Trail Ruts and Register Cliff, the only place in town to get them at. Admission is free. The kids were given That's WY orange flags to take pics with on our vacation in Wyoming which was a lot of fun! They also got a free sticker and a map on where to collect more of them all over wyoming! A must stop at place! The lady also gave us a great amount of history on Guernsey and the military camp we passed by on S. 270 on the way down from Lusk. Overall, one of our favorite places to stop! See more..

I had spent the night at Guernsey State Park and was just driving around in this little town when I found this hidden treasure. It's just a nine hole course but well maintained. It's worth the time to play. See more..
  6. 3.0 Rifle Pit Hill (1 review)
    - Hey, this is a great place to take a break!
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Rifle Pit Hill image
What’s the matter, been on the road from the Black Hills heading for Denver or Cheyenne and need a little break? This is a great spot to learn about the Oregon Trail and the Mormon Trail. Here is where they dug pits to protect the iron ore pits and the settlers heading west. It’s an easy pull off. Near here you can also see the actual ruts of the Oregon Trail and where the settlers carved the names of their home towns into the rocks (not at this site, but nearby). We have driven through Wyoming several times in the last few years and missed so much of that history; especially if you are a city person or traveling with a family you are always worried about “getting stuck out here.” Here is a quick spot to stretch your legs right on the way!
