I really appreciated the patience they had with me since I have not been riding much recently. The horse I had was very well mannered, Choco. The Visitor Center has 2 hour free parking which allowed enough time to complete the self-guided walk around town including the tour of the Belle Boyd and Balthis houses. There are numerous brochures - I recommend stopping here if you need information outside Front Royal Such as maps for Skyline Drive and the wineries and Civil War Trails. Front Royal Canoe Company-Day Trips image
Had a great experience with Front Royal Outdoors. Their facilities had everything I needed and more (like a changing room and decent restrooms). There staff was personal and responsive - picked us right up when I called to say we were approaching the end of our river route, they even arrived early. And the buses were much cleaner and newer than another Shenandoah outfitters we’ve used before. Thanks for a great experience! We’ll be back. See more..
  8. 4.5 Shenandoah National Park (60 reviews)
    - Beautiful Day on Skyline Drive Aug 2021
Spent More than 3 hours National Parks
    Shenandoah National Park image
We had an amazing day trip on Skyline Drive August 7, 2021. People drove pretty carefully, which is incredibly important . We did see one deer who tried to cross the Drive near a bed in the road. I hope she made it across safely. Someone said she saw a youngish bear cross the road. Big Meadows was not a big meadow this time, but we enjoyed seeing all the beautiful native flowers all along the roadway and overlooks. We also loved seeing all the bees, moths and butterflies on these flowers. I did see a lot of Park Rangers in trucks and in uniform which is good. The only people going on Skyline Drive should be the ones who want to see nature, hike, camp and drive carefully and enjoy the views. The speed limit on Skyline Drive is only 35 miles/hour. That is for the safety of the people and animals. It was nice going into the great room at Big Meadows Lodge. Someone was setting up for a wedding, which is nice. But I hope wedding photographers realize most people are only visiting these places for an hour or two, so be mindful of the tourists who also want to see the great views.. I was glad to see the restaurant at Big Meadows open, but didn't have a chance to eat there. The gift shop at the Wayside next to Big Meadows Visitor Center was nice. I liked the variety of sandwiches, drinks, snacks and ice cream we could get as take out. The Wayside no longer has an eat-in restaurant (probably due to Covid). The Visitor Center at Big Meadows is open for information from knowledgeable park rangers, but does not have the movie going or inside exhibit open (due to covid19). I did see rangers conducting programs outside. Masks are required indoors in the Shenandoah National Park again. Better safe than sorry. The bathrooms were nice and clean. See more..
  9. 4.5 Chester Gap Cellars (58 reviews)
    - The views! The wine!
    Thursday: Wineries & Vineyards
    Chester Gap Cellars image
Breathtaking views, spaced-out gathering spots, and a few little exploring paths make this a worthwhile winery visit. Full disclosure: Girls' Travel Team adventure landed us at the Idle Hour AirBnB in front of this vineyard, and it's closed during the week, while we were there. However, one of the lovely owners, Travis, hand-delivered a Merlot and Vintner's Red to our group and we were impressed! We can't wait to come back and try all of of the wines during a weekend. 12. 4.5 Belle Boyd Cottage (27 reviews)
    - Inexpensive, unexpected pleasure
    Historic Sites
    Belle Boyd Cottage image
Belle Boyd Cottage is not an earth shaking historical site -- but it is worth a visit. The cottage was home to a female Confederate spy (who sounds like she was quite a character). The cottage is staffed by volunteer docents from the historical society and they take their jobs seriously. I have visited twice, and each time we got a private tour. The docents were a bit different in their focus -- but each wove a great story of the civil war in this part of the Shenandoah Valley and of the life and times of a local spy. In addition to seeing Belle Boyd, you can opt to see a second historic home on your visit that dates to the period that Front Royal was initially settled. Inexpensive, interesting way to pass an hour or so. If you don't have much time, be sure to tell the docent at the beginning of the visit. They will tailor their presentation to your timing. We probably spent an hour and a half looking at the homes and asking questions. See more..

  15. 4.5 Balthis House (13 reviews)
    - Nice stop with the Belle Boyd Cottage
Spent < 1 hour Speciality Museums • History Museums
    Balthis House image
Do the combined tour with the Belle Boyd Cottage next door; it's only $5. The Balthis House is old by Front Royal standards (1780s) with later additions. It's not the most interesting historic house you'll ever see, but the tour does a good job of explaining who lived there and their role in Front Royal history, as well as the house's various expansions and renovations. A good stop. See more..

  17. 4.5 St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church (9 reviews)
    - Everything a Catholic Church should be!
    Thursday: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM Churches & Cathedrals
St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church image
Attended here for mass while visiting the area from out of town. Wonderful, welcoming community. The 8:30 a.m. Sunday liturgy was very reverent and, in my opinion, the best of both the Tridentine and Novus Ordo (Latin propers, Ad Orientum for Eucharist, readings in vernacular facing people, a good mix of both English and Latin Hymns, Saint Michael Prayer, communion at the altar rail). The church was also filled and had many young families. The homily was excellent and on point as well. I wish every Catholic church like this. Architecturally and artistically the church is very nice as well. See more..
  18. 4.5 Buzzard Rock North (9 reviews)
    - The Reward Compared to the Effort Of Buzzard Rock
    Spent 2-3 hours Hiking Trails
    Buzzard Rock North image
I may be somewhat bias because I live at the base of the mountain below Buzzard Rock, but I believe most who have been up there will say the payoff exceeds the effort. Most will have parked at the Buzzard Rock trailhead off Mountain Road or Route 119 a couple miles from the Passage Creek Fish Hatchery. The gradual white blazed trail leads you gently through the wooded terrain to a significant outcropping of rocks along the ridge with an uninterrupted 270 degree view towards Winchester and the breathtaking valley below. Prominently visible are the ponds at the fish hatchery immediately below. For an easy to moderate 45 minute walk you are offered a commanding view relatively cheap in terms of energy expended. And, it’s all downhill home... See more..
  19. 4.5 Front Royal Country Club (6 reviews)
    - Great golf experience
    Spent 2-3 hours Parks
This is the definition of a municipal golf course. Although it is no longer managed by the town, which has been a good thing. The club house has much more of a welcoming feel now. There are excellent areas to sit and relax out doors. The course has two practice greens, one next to the club house. The golf experience is great. Four holes with views of the Shenandoah River. An excellent par five in the two tee 9/18 hole set up. Carts are comfortable, the greens are in very good shape. Sometimes even reach a very speedy condition which can be fun. The course is well maintained, inexpensive and a challange for golfers of all levels. One of my favorite golf courses to play. See more..

  21. 4.5 Rockland Park (2 reviews)
    - Tough disc golf course, but wonderful nature
    Parks • Hiking Trails
    Rockland Park image
Tough disc golf course, nice playground, multiple picnic areas, permanent corn hole boards (looks to be bring your own bags though). Played the tough disc golf course. Narrow and hilly, lost 3 discs. But saw plenty of nature, deer, garter snake eating a toad, turtle, pileated wood pecker. See more..

We decided to take a short road trip on a warm spring day and always love the Front Royal area. Check trip advisor and saw that this museum had recently opened. When we arrived, we were treated warmly and made to feel right at home. There was a bbq truck outside so we grabbed some and came inside to enjoy with a cold one. Plan on doing more day trips to this area and will definitely stop by each time. See more..

There is also a restaurant, gift shop and gas pumps if you need to fill up. It does get crowded on the weekends and in the fall. Spent < 1 hour Wineries & Vineyards
    Miller Winery image
Having read reviews on Trip Advisor and seeing this on the VA Winery map, I decided to give it a try. Their website is still up and had a post back in January about new hours. I found it in the alley as the other reviews stated and found the store front. I entered through a doorway that had weeds all around it and into a dark hallway. I heard voices past the door at the end and opened it. I startled the family in there and they told me that the winery was permanently closed. Bummer. See more..
