    - What a place!

    Adams Museum image
The Adams Museum is the Black Hills’ oldest history museum. In 1930 pioneer businessman W.E. Adams founded the Adams Museum in downtown Deadwood with the purpose of preserving and displaying the history of the Black Hills. The Adams Museum is home to some of the Black Hills’ greatest treasures including Potato Creek Johnny’s gold nugget, beloved American illustrator N.C. Wyeth’s pencil sketch drawing of Western legend Wild Bill Hickok, the mysterious Thoen Stone record of the Ezra Kind party’s discovery of gold in the Hills in the 1830s and a one-of-a-kind plesiosaur (marine reptile). In addition to exhibits on all three levels, the Adams General Store is located on the main floor. See more..
  7. 4.5 Adams House (505 reviews)
    - Wonderful Look at the Past
Temporarily closed - Closed until Mar 31, 2023 Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • History Museums
    Adams House image
The Historic Adams House was built in 1892 by Deadwood pioneers Harris and Anna Franklin. Local contemporary press described the home as "the grandest house west of the Mississippi." The elegant Queen Anne-style house heralded a wealthy and socially prominent new age for Deadwood, a former rough and tumble gold mining town. Harris and Anna Franklin’s son Nathan bought the house for $1 in 1905. In 1920, Nathan Franklin sold the house to W.E. and Alice Adams for $8,500. Adams' second wife Mary closed up the house in 1936, two years after W.E.'s death, leaving the contents and furnishings intact. See more..
  8. 4.5 Tatanka: Story of the Bison (449 reviews)
    - Amazing
Saturday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
Tatanka: Story of the Bison image
We stopped at Tatanka, Story of the Bison and found it very impressive. We watched the short film and found it interesting. The fact that when the railroads came to the west, people shot them from the trains and almost made them extinct in a short period of time. Very sad , so I’m glad this story was told and how they have come back with the help of concerned Americans. They are truly majestic . There was a lady at the museum who talked about how the Indian used every part of the bison to live. The fee to get in is not much . They do have a senior fee. Kevin Costner receives no money and much of it goes for the upkeep of the museum and the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation which is extremely poor. We could not get to the reservation due to COVID. Drive through Custer State Park and the Badlands and enjoy the beauty of these amazing animals. Also admire the awesome sculptures in the back. Well worth the money and trip. See more..

    - Super amazing
    Saturday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent < 1 hour History Museums
    Days of '76 Museum image
Live re-creations of the town's rich history started in 1924 through the Days of '76 celebration and award-winning rodeo. The celebration began as a way to honor Deadwood's pioneers - the prospectors, miners, muleskinners and madams who poured into the Black Hills in 1876 to settle the gold-filled gulches of Dakota Territory. Deadwood's newest museum documents the celebration and rodeo. The Days of '76 Museum features exceptional displays of carriages, firearms, American Indian artifacts and illustrates Deadwood's enduring friendship with Buffalo Bill Cody. The Days of '76 Museum is wheelchair accessible. The Mercantile gift shop is located on the first floor. See more..
  12. 4.5 Boot Hill Tours (246 reviews)
    - Very fun and educational
    Sightseeing Tours
    Boot Hill Tours image
Very fun and educational. We had Joe as our tour guide and he has been working as a tour guide for 8 or 9 years. Our teenage daughter who wasn’t very excited to sit in a bus for an hour was very thankful she went as Joe was funny and kept all engaged. The tour was small dog friendly which also helped in our decision to go on tour. Someone had to stay in bus with dog at the cemetery as pets are not allowed in cemetery but we audio recorded Joe so my wife could hear his cemetery presentation. We learned a lot of new things about Deadwood during the tour. We highly recommend taking the tour. See more..
  13. 4.5 Mt Roosevelt Monument (198 reviews)
    - Theodore Roosevelt Friendship Tower Memorial
Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
    Mt Roosevelt Monument image
This was called the Roosevelt Friendship Tower. It was built by a gentleman in honor of his 35-year friendship with Theodore Roosevelt just after Roosevelt's death. It may seem simple to some, but we thoroughly enjoyed seeing it. There's a short, easy hike to get to the tower and behind the tower is a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. We even climbed the small, winding staircase to stand atop of the tower for additional views. It's in beautiful condition. A nice stop over on your way to or from the Town of Deadwood. See more..
  14. 4.5 Deadwood Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau (135 reviews)
    - Really a Great Experience
    Saturday: Visitor Centers
Deadwood Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau image
It is quite unfortunate that the reviewer below gave such a bad review for Deadwood based on the fact that she is disabled. It isn't quite fair to knock the whole HISTORIC attraction because it wasn't designed for scooters when the town was built over a hundred years ago. I can certainly understand the disappointment but so many people in Deadwood depend on the tourist money for their livelihood. It would be more fair to leave an honest disappointed review without being so slanted. Our experience was great. The shop owners, historians, and actors seem to love their city and know a lot about it. People were very nice to our son. The Visitor Bureau staff were very helpful and pleasant. Deadwood is a historic town and it was so much fun visiting. We are grateful for this lifetime memory for our family. See more..

  16. 4.5 Deadwood Welcome Center (57 reviews)
    - Very Helpful
Saturday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Visitor Centers
    Deadwood Welcome Center image
We had limited time in Deadwood as we were just passing through. First, the lady at the welcome center gave us a map and marked out things to see while in town, as well as waterfall trails in Spearfish Canyon. The center, located in an 1897 train depot, also had a few historical exhibits we found interesting. It's just a block from the historical area and offers clean restrooms. See more..
  17. 4.5 Wild Bill Hickok (39 reviews)
    - You might pass it if you aren't looking.
    Monuments & Statues
    Wild Bill Hickok image
It's way down on the end of town with no signage, and you might not even notice it if you aren't looking, but it supposed to be an actual size statue of Deadwood's biggest legend. If you like statues, and history, it is pretty cool. See more..

  21. 4.0 Historic Old Town (1.205 reviews)
    - Snitches steaks were the best we've ever had!
    Historic Walking Areas
    Historic Old Town image
It was a bit difficult finding parking in Deadwood on our first visit. One public parking said closed, but it had cars in it, some didn’t seem to say anything and we weren’t sure where we’d have dinner. We ended up parking further away than we wanted, but it was a public parking where we could figure out how to pay for the parking. We went into one of the first casino/hotels that we found and were going to have dinner there, but they couldn’t get us in until 9 pm (2 hours later) and the same with the buffet. In spectacular news, we got reservations at Snitches on OpenTable! We walked to Tin Lizzie’s, had an amazing meal, and rolled ourselves back to our car. Snitches is our new high expectations for what a steak should be and the price was awesome. We probably should have taken the $1/person shuttle to Tin Lizzie’s, but it was a good walk and we got to play tourist a little. There were many Pokemon Go stops/gyms along the main drag. See more..
