My wife and I took the 3 1/2 hour eco-tour by boat with our son and his fiancee, which included a couple of stops at shoals and beaches to walk around. Capt. Dan was a great guide with deep knowledge of the wildlife in the area and a willingness to share. He clearly knew some very good spots, even mid-day in a period where wildlife might be scarce. We certainly got our fill. In addition, his knowledge of local history and his perspective as a "northern emigree" made for some fun conversations on the boat between sites. I took a 2-hour sunset cruise with Captain Gary and it was a wonderful experience. I was traveling solo and one advantage of going through Smallwood Store was that visiting the museum offered an opportunity to meet and team up with another solo traveler (so we could share the minimum cost). Gary is patient, kind, knowledgeable, skilled, funny, and great company. He's part of a historic family in the area, which adds a lot to the experience, and he knows a lot about wildlife. Captain Caleb had us catching fish from the time the first line hit the water till it was time to go home 6hrs later. This was very impressive considering a front had moved through that morning. We caught an amazing 11 different species. Limited out on trout. Never had to bait a hook or take one off. We talked fishing all day and when he fished with us he caught a big drum and a beautiful redfish. Felt like we were fishing with family. Super clean boat. Comfortable ride. This is a not-to-be-missed experience! Capt Craig, 7th generation native of this rarest of areas, opened the curtains to let us experience a disappearing life. Dark clouds departed as we stepped inside Capt Craig’s boat, his eye missing nothing and rich history fascinating. Meandering through the group of manatees we headed out toward open water and a lush green islands. Past a rookery of egrets and cormorants we found a roseate spoonbill sifting and feeding. At Calusa Indian mounds of oyster shells we disembarked to explore the layers of centuries, noting pottery and primitive tools. Capt Craig’s family were forced to leave their own island home in 1960’s but we explored the graveyard, exotic plants, snails, and paths. Shelling just before sunset we found so many treasures. What a day of fishing! Capt Ray knows his stuff and put us on fish. Reds, drum, snook, tarpon and seatrout. Capt Ray kept us in stitches too with his jokes and stories. Not a dull moment to the day. What a place too! if you've never been to the 10,000 Islands you haven't fished. We saw dolphins, manatees, sharks, jumping eagle rays and hundreds species of shore birds. I was not very hopeful the fish would be hungry on such a crisp morning. Starting off the ride out to the fishing grounds through the mangroves was amazing with sparkly waters, thousands of birds on sand bars, and in the air, it was magical. (and cold) zipping along at 30 mph... brrrr We released most fish only keeping a few fish for the table. His knowledge of the animals and plants of the glades is outstanding.
