    Akta Lakota Museum image
Visit the Akta Lakota Museum to experience a living lesson on the Native American way of life, past and present. Each year we receive thousands of visitors from all over the globe that want to deepen their appreciation of Lakota culture. As an outreach program of St. Joseph's Indian School we pride ourselves on not just providing that experience but creating an atmosphere conducive to learning and healing into the hearts of our students as well as our visitors. What makes our museum such a wonderful experience is our focus. We have an outstanding collection of cultural, historical and artistic works that relate specifically to the Northern Plains Indian Tribes, the ancestry of the students served at St. Joseph's. Our historical collection honors the past while our contemporary collection represents the creative spirit of today's world. We work closely with Indian artist and artisans to present contemporary artwork that builds on cultural traditions while expressing itself in new ways. What you take away from your visit is the understanding that Lakota culture is not just a thing of the past. It's alive and thriving today. See more..
  2. 5.0 Dignity (360 reviews)
    - AMAZING WORK OF ART
    Saturday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
    Dignity image
I was traveling east on Interstate 90 and decided to make a quick stop at the South Dakota Rest Area on the east side of the Missouri River near Chamberlain, South Dakota. In addition to having all the typical rest stop amenities, like clear rest rooms, picnic area and vending machines. In addition to having a small museum dedicated to the Lewis and Clark Exposition, the center piece of this rest area is the amazing Dignity Statue. While the statue is visible from Interstate 90, I highly recommend that you take time to stop and view this amazing work of art close up. In talking to a member of the rest area staff, I found out that this impressive work of art is relatively new having been dedicated in 2016. It stands 50 feet tall and is 32 feet wide. Be sure to visit the small museum inside the rest area and take time to enjoy the views of the Missouri River. This is a great place to stop and stretch your legs. See more..

What a gem in a small town! I called for appointment and had a clarifying facial. Facial resulted in smooth, soft skin (mine was rough due to age and weather). A week after- still nice and clear!! The facility is on North Main and is very clean, bright and airy. Stella is upbeat and friendly. She likes her business and you can tell. Thank you!! See more..

Spending time in the area and decided to rediscover downtown Chamberlain. This great kitchen store is located right next to the Pickett Fence flower shop. I walked in and was speechless at the displays of quality baking gear as well as the wall of “you need this” gadgets. Cookbooks, salts, oils and wine as well as kitchen linens and aprons round out their offering! Such nice quality items at reasonable prices. Let’s keep them here- spend locally!! See more..
  6. 5.0 The Quilt Shop (1 review)
    - wonderful quilt shop
Spent 1-2 hours Speciality & Gift Shops
My mother is a quilter so we stopped at several quilt shops along our way across South Dakota. This was by far the best quilt shop for finding unique and special material that is unique to the South Dakota area. Very nicely ran & nicely displayed. In addition to quilting supplies she has beading & Indian jewelry. Also, she has a wonderfully comfortable chair & tv in the front room for anyone to enjoy if they are not a quilt shopper but with someone that is. Well worth the stop!! See more..

  8. 5.0 The Pickett Fence (1 review)
    - If you like antique stores, it's worth a stop.
    Antique Shops
    The Pickett Fence image
This is across the street from another, better marked, antique store in Chamberlain, South Dakota. The day we were there, this place was open, but the other was not. The selection is varied; plenty to keep someone who likes perusing antique stores entertained and intrigued. There is enough variety that I would be surprised if you left empty handed. Prices were pleasantly inexpensive. The only downside is that there are about three or four steps at the front entrance, so it is not accessible if steps are a problem. The proprietor was friendly and available. She readily took the time to show us different things that interested us. Some proprietors at antique stores seem to do that begrudgingly, but not here. She was upbeat and helpful. See more..

  14. 4.0 American Legion Memorial Bridge (1 review)
    - A great walk with views of the Missouri River
    Bridges
    American Legion Memorial Bridge image
Numerous times I have stayed at Lee's Best Western located on the east side of the bridge. The bridge spans he Missouri River and affords the opportunity for some incredible views. On this trip I caught the sunset and all the spectacular lighting that goes with it. There is a designated bike and pedestrian lane, though not well defined, offering some safety from the traffic. You can tailor the walk to your liking, on my last visit it was about a mile which is about the distance of the immediate span proper out and back. I look forward to stretching my legs here after a day in the car. See more..
  15. 3.0 Charly's Restaurant SD (7 reviews)
    - Swam today, Eaten tonight
    Bars & Clubs
    Charly's Restaurant SD image
Came here after day 1 on the water. This place graciously cooks your catch and gives you salad bar and potato for $10. Can't beat the price. And they put a picture of your days catch in their hall of fame in their entryway to boot. Salad was cold, crisp and had great accompaniments including peppers, cheese, macaronu salad and a reallt thick, tasty bleu cheese dressing. The breading on the walleye was very light and not overbearing. And the cold leftover fish we didn't finish was delicious for lunch out in the boat today. We're heading back tonight for more of the same. See more..
