Wat Sri Sawai is one of the oldest in Sukhothai, built in the late 12th and early 13th centuries. It was originally built as a Hindu temple, which is evident from the three distinctive prangs. Visitors can get some really cool photos of the temple as background to an old ficus tree with impressive gnarled roots (an iconic shot in Sukhothai); when arriving at the temple, walk to the right outside the temple walls to reach the amazing tree. Wat Chang Lom was founded in the 14th century and is located in the central zone of the quiet, peaceful Si Satchanalai Historical Park. Wat Chang Lom means “temple surrounded by elephants”, as its main, Sinhalese style, bell-shaped stupa has its base surrounded by 39 large elephant sculptures, eight on the East side, nine on the other sides and one larger elephant at each of the four corners. Once covered with plaster adorned with elaborate carved decorations, most of them are in a state of disrepair. - A great Khmer Historical Site
    Ancient Ruins
    Wat Phra Pai Luang image
I visited this Wat in the late evening by bicycle and it was spectacular with the sun setting! As it was not as famous as the other wats, there was no one else there. Wat Phra Pai Luang is still one my favorite Wat; that made me feel a bit like Indiana Jones….an Adventurer, visiting the ruin of a Great Lost Empire that still stood / has the remains of Lord Buddha almost everywhere, which still makes me wonder how on how great it was back then; especially with their fine detailed Khmer architecture. 14. 4.0 Wat Trapang Ngoen (76 reviews)
    - Peaceful during evening
    Ancient Ruins
    Wat Trapang Ngoen image
Wat Trapang Ngoen, imo it is the lesser visit Wat within the main zone of Sukhothai Historical Park because of its location and not well-known as Wat Mahathat and Wat Si Sawai. I visited this Wat during evening, I am the only one at the temple and I found it is very peaceful where you can listen to all the birdy chipping returning to their homes. Wat Trapang Ngoen is located next to the lake and rubber trees. Views during sunset gave the different views compared to Wat Sa Si. You can enjoy the reflections of the opposite views at the lake. Most of all, come here by bicycle from Old Sukhothai: the road is good and quiet and you can admire the country scape and look for storks and herons. See more..

  20. 4.0 Sangkalok Museum (30 reviews)
    - Superb Ceramics Fix

    Sangkalok Museum image
If you like pots, old pots, you'll love this place. I hit the doors at opening time at 9:00 am, so for much of the time it was me and the guide, that's it. A private museum owned by the hotel next door, thankfully this man has a passion to preserve these marvellous ceramics for the future, and is pleased to share them with the rest of us. Downstairs is a well ordered route around the history of ceramics in Sukhothai and places further afield in South East Asia, and upstairs some remarkable objects linking art with Buddhist philosophy. Thankfully I did read most to both guide books while going around, unfortunately you cannot buy them to take them away to remind you of the pleasure you've had. When you leave, head into the old town near the Historical Park and have a look around Suthep Sangkalok for how they make it today, ceramic plates and pots of all types, and statuary too! You'll want to take some home for sure, I did. I have never visited a place like this one before! It´s one of the best experiences of my life! We were here as journalists but they do the same service for tourists... There are amazing people working on this project, you can try on your own what it takes to be a Thai farmer - I worked on a rice field, sat on a buffalo and cooked Thai food - and then ate it :) There is also amazing shop where I bought around 5kg of very special organic rice and took it home. Its the best rice I have ever tasted. Everything is 100% organic and the stuff will guide you around the whole farm and explain everything... If you go to Sukhothai, don´t miss this! See more..
  26. 5.0 Sukhothai Loi Krathong and Candle Festival (16 reviews)

Sukhothai Loi Krathong and Candle Festival image
Loi Krathong is a nationwide festival and will be celebrated throughout Thailand on the full moon of the 12th month of the traditional lunar calendar (around November). Sukhothai was where the tradition originated and is one of the most popular destinations to celebrate the festival. The event usually takes places over five days and nights with several activities, most of which will take place in Sukhothai's Historical Park (the old city). Highlights of the celebration include: floating of the traditional lanterns, fireworks, folk dancing and a spectacular light & sound presentation. See more..
  27. 3.5 Sukhothai Wintour (12 reviews)
    - Safe, reasonable, late arrival
    Public Transportation Systems
    Sukhothai Wintour image
Sukhothai Wintour Bus service runs daily service to Chiang Mai in the North, and Ayutthaya/Bangkok to the South. The price is reasonable, at 324TB and includes a small snack and drink. It is best to book 1 day in advance, as the Friday I took the bus to Chiang Mai, the bus was very full, mainly with foreigners. The main drawback is the lack of reliable arrival time. I had see an estimated arrival time of 1:30pm, and told my tour company to call and confirm, as they were meeting me at the bus terminal. Instead, we did not arrive until 3:30pm, or 2 hours later. If I had known, I would have cancelled the 1/2 day tour; as it was, I still had time to visit the Wats, etc. as they close at 6:00-6:30pm. But everything felt rushed. My advice: do not plan any events, the day you take Sukhothai Wintour bus. Treat it as a 'travel date', and nothing more. It worked out; but I had a very impatient tour guide, on arrival. See more..
  28. 4.0 Wat Chedi Jet Taew (10 reviews)
    - A microcosm of Buddhist shrines
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Wat Chedi Jet Taew image
Wat Chedi Ched Thaeo is a large temple at the center of the park and consists of 32 chedis in various styles arranged in a U-shape around a principal chedi. The principal lotus-bud chedi, identifiable by its height and its central position has a gallery surrounding it and a Vihara in front of it and is surrounded by subsidiary chedis at each corner and at the center of three of its sides. The remaining smaller chedis are arranged between the subsidiary chedis and on the sides of the Vihara is a U-shape around the principal chedi. A smaller monastery is also present at the far end. The entire temple complex is surrounded by two walls which in turn are surrounded by a moat. Due to the large number of chedis in various styles (lotus-bud, prasat style and round) in the temple, it is believed that this was the funerary temple or the Royal Graveyard of the Sukhothai dynasty. The central location of the temple in the park also hints at its importance. The temple is a microcosm of Buddhist shrines and is well worth a visit as part of a visit to Si Satchanalai historical park. See more..
  29. 4.0 Wat Nang Phaya (10 reviews)
    - Beautiful stucco decorations on the wall
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Wat Nang Phaya image
This is a traditional buddhist temple with a boundary wall enclosing a bell-shaped chedi placed behind a prayer hall. Its location on the central axis of the park indicates that this was an important temple. There are steep steps leading to the first level of the chedi and the door of the temple. However, it is best known for a small portion of the wall which has survived along with its beautiful stucco decorations which provide a glimpse into what the structures in the park might have looked like in their prime. Not to be missed attraction in the Si Satchanalai historical park. See more..

    - Interesting site.
    Points of Interest & Landmarks
Celadon Kiln Site Study and Conservation Centre (Thuriang Kiln) image
It is located 5 kms from si Satchanalai Park. You need a car. We have a driver who took us here and to the Si Satchanalai Park and several other temples. Our hotel was in Sukhothai. The site has value as it tells you about the origins of the Thai people and their expression through ceramic production. People from these region produced nice glazed pottery and the manufacturing is a very interesting and complicated process. Very few people visit this site. You have to pay a 100 Baht ticket. The museum is well-presented. It has a roof and you have to remove your shoes. It looks clean. There are many explanations. They are in English and Thai. I found it interesting. It is not mandatory. However, it adds knowledge to a cultural visit to Thailand. It reminds you of an old important economic activity that was important to the region and went into decline after trading with other cultures like China. The ceramics production has reactivated in this region again and is known as the Sanghkalok ceramics. I think, the Thai authorities should include this visit in the ticket to the Sukhothai park. In reality is not an impressive site and its inclusion within the ticket may attract foreign visitors. See more..

Took a bus from Sukhothai to see the Si Satchanalai Historical Park. Met a couple on the bus who were also going there. The bus dropped us off on the main road at a store that rented bicycles to go and see the park. From the store, we crossed a small, almost rope-like bridge and was very close to this temple site. Absolutely stunning. They have a small 20 baht entrance fee. The statues here are well preserved and maintained. While there were a few structures in the main park, I felt this area had the most impact. It is a few kilometers to the main park from here but you can stop along the way at a few small sites and explore. See more..

The traditional way of crafting votive tablets is very interesting and crafting them with your own hands is unique. They dry quickly in 2 hours. The family packs them for you safely so you can take them to your hotel. We also tried archery and a traditional form of mini bowling. All great fun. We enjoyed the experience very much and highly recommend it. We just showed up unannounced around 11:30 and they were happy to do the course for us. See more..
