  6. 5.0 Walcott Place (2 reviews)
    - An oasis of peace, remembrance and contemplation
    Historic Sites
Derek Walcott Square, Castries. Before entering the square/park one must stand in awe at the huge saman tree – I was told its over 300 years old - with its huge and spreading overhanging branches at the entrance. As you enter under the great arch bearing the Walcott name a narrow path leads you through beautifully landscaped gardens with colorful flower beds. There is a small fountain and a bandstand. This site is an oasis of peace, contemplation and remembrance despite being in central Castries. Have a look at the busts of St. Lucians, Derek Walcott Nobel prize poet winner for literature 1992 and Sir Arthur Lewis also a Nobel prize winner in economics 1979. The park was renamed three times before settling on its present name. There’s also a monument to locals who lost their lives in the war. Do cross the street and engage with the local sidewalk vendor of jewelry made from copperwire. Very beautifully crafted. See more..

The Bird Sanctuary is in a beautiful area of rainforest, and was worth it for the hike and views. Ken was an excellent tour guide, full of interesting info about local flora, fauna, and island history. I would wholeheartedly recommend a visit! We got the local bus from Castries to Millet for $4.50 EC each, 1 way. The bus stop to Millet is on Monigiraud St, outside a shop called Wet & Cold Express (I mention this as it took a while to find it). Bus goes when its full, and took about 45 min to reach Millet.
