  12. 4.5 Kimironko Market (201 reviews)
    - Brace yourself!
Thursday: 6:00 AM - 9:00 AM Spent 2-3 hours Flea & Street Markets
    Kimironko Market image
“Bustling” doesn’t begin to describe this Mecca of commerce. Tools, clothes, housewares, trinkets, an incredible array of things are on sale. The clothes made to order on treadle sewing machines are decent quality and fun. Now, the experience, because you have to be ready to roll with it. Aisles are narrow, some dimly lit, and packed with people and goods. Young non local women will attract a lot of attention, but mostly from a distance. Overall the market seems pretty safe. If you’re white or obviously a tourist, you will be approached by people persistently hawking their stuff or offering to “help” you. Politely and confidently telling them you’re not interested helps, ignoring them works too. There are no prices on anything, so everything is a negotiation. But even if you don’t buy anything it’s a great experience. See more..

    Spent < 1 hour Battlefields • Cemeteries
    Camp Kigali Memorial image
This covers the first few hours of the genocide and how things unfolded. I highly recommend visiting Camp Kigali since this is where the killing of the peacekeepers and Prime Minister happened. The bullet holes seen in the photo's are real. There is a different, a more visceral, feel than the Genocide museum. This is a small site so how much time you spend is up to you. We were there for over an hour. See more..

    1000 Hills Distillery image
Founded in 2014 by two gentlemen with a love of fine whisky, stunning views and a strong sense of pride in working with local communities, 1000 Hills Distillery was born. But like most great ideas, originally they thought of starting a vineyard, but lucky for us, they thought better! To be honest, it's a challenge to find high quality ingredients, but one of the reasons we chose Rwanda in addition to the amazing resilience of the country is that we could source materials locally, thus supporting micro and small businesses. Since our beginning we come to produce five unique Made in Rwanda, triple distilled liquors, such as a Coffee Liqueur, Vodka, Light Spiced Rum, London Dry Gin and Single Malt Whisky! Unlike most alcohol companies, social impact is at the heart of the company! To learn more, book a Distillery Tour! From all of us at 1000 Hills Distillery, please enjoy responsibly. See more..

  22. 4.5 Nyabugogo Marche Market (15 reviews)
    - I love a real, local market!
    Flea & Street Markets
    Nyabugogo Marche Market image
This market was the real deal. It was truly a market for locals, we were the only non-Rwandans walking through the incredibly crowded market and streets. On one side of the street are some covered areas with produce and products. On the other side, is a three or four story building with shops all the way up. Behind it is one of the busiest taxi and bus stands I've ever seen. Great to see, but not if you're someone who gets nervous in big crowds without knowing the local language. We loved it! See more..

  26. 4.0 Muslim Quarter (85 reviews)
    - Ownership of City has changed many times
    Thursday: 5:00 AM - 10:00 PM Neighborhoods
    Muslim Quarter image
This quarter of the Old City holds many sites of interest, including the Western Wall, which borders on the Temple Mount. The Western Wall Plaza is often busy. On Saturday night, many people are out strolling or eating out. The best access to the Western Wall is through the Dung Gate, which was once used to haul rubbish from the city. Access to the Jewish Quarter can be made through the Zion Gate, which is in the southwest of the Old City. Ownership of the city has changed many times; the Zion Gate is pock-marked with bullets holes. See more..

  28. 3.5 Rwanda Art Museum (91 reviews)
    - Beautiful grounds, interesting presidential home to visit
Thursday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Art Museums
    Rwanda Art Museum image
We visited the Rwanda Art Museum this morning and so enjoyed our visit. We had a lovely guide who walked us through the previous President's home. While it's 40 years old, it was still very pleasant and interesting to see. We especially wanted to see the current exhibition by women artists in Rwanda. Some really brilliant artists, and it was also fun to see the permanent exhibit. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. There are several old water fountains and the swimming pool which are all empty now, but still beautifully built. And, we visited the site of the plane crash where both the Rwandan and Burundian presidents were killed. See more..
  29. 3.5 Kandt House Museum (64 reviews)
    - Worth a quick whirl
Thursday: 8:00 AM - 5:30 PM Speciality Museums
    Kandt House Museum image
Where else can you see an exhibit of live snakes in Kigali? This place is small, literally the house of a former German explorer and resident, and has been converted into a sort of living museum / natural history museum. Worth a visit if only for the live snakes! The rest of the exhibits in the rooms are interesting, if a bit static and outdated. Recommend the self-guided option, unless you have extra time, since the guides may insist on showing you EVERYTHING in the museum, each with explanation. This could take you an hour or more, so avoid if you're in a hurry. That said, the guide was very well informed and engaging, and spoke excellent English. But we really didn't have a huge amount of time to spend there, so we sort of had to politely rush him along. See more..
  30. 3.5 Parliament (37 reviews)
    - House of history
    Government Buildings
    Parliament image
So much history surrounds the Rwandan House of Parliament. During the genocide, it was for a long time the safest place to be in. Our tour guide took us on a historical journey of how the war was fought and won and the role played by this historic building which still stands in all its majesty. At the very top, there is a terrace from where one could view most of Kigali below. And as a reminder, there is a canon gun pointing at the strategic hill opposite. It was from that spot that shells were fired to dislodge the enemy from the strategic hill. See more..
