Virunga National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, on the border of Uganda and Rwanda. Virunga is Africa’s oldest national park and is also the continent’s most biologically diverse protected area. The park’s 7800 square kilometers (3000 square miles) includes forests, savannas, lava plains, swamps, erosion valleys, active volcanoes, and the glaciated peaks of the Rwenzori mountains. Virunga is home to about a quarter of the world’s critically endangered mountain gorillas. The park’s two other Great Ape species, eastern lowland Grauer’s gorillas and chimpanzees, make Virunga the only park in the world to host three taxa of Great Apes. Another prominent inhabitant of the park is the Okapi, an endangered species that resembles a zebra but is more closely related to the giraffe. Large colonies of hippopotami, forest and savanna elephants, lions, and numerous rare bird species can also be found in the park. See more..

I can’t say enough about this trip. For starters i would call this an adventure...not a vacation. We did the Gorillas and Nyrigongo trip. It was one of the most incredible experiences of my life thus far. It was surreal to be with the gorillas..I’m still in awe. The volcano was physically and mentally one of the toughest things I’ve ever done. But, the feeling of accomplishment at the top(and getting down) was more than worth it. Tresor was an amazing guide. They took such good care of us. One thing to point out...they did keep our passports at the border in the DRC...that was scary. I would recommend having a passport card as well as your passport to enter the DRC...maybe that’s common knowledge but not having my passport was a bit nerve racking. All of them responded with offers but Virunga Amani's was the most professional, inclusive and fair priced. I was travelling in Rwanda and wanted to see the Gorillas, however it was too costly so a traveler recommended that I contact Barack and see the the Gorillas at the World Famous Virunga NP instead. Within hours Barack agreed to sort out my entrance visa into the DRC, arranged accommodation whilst there and in Rwanda, and arranged for me to not only see the Gorillas but to also climb Nyiragongo (which is a very close second to the experience of seeing the gorillas). When in Gisenyi, Barack picked me up, took me to his house where I was introduced to his family and friends who all kept me entertained. The gorilla and volcano experience are just as you'd imagine. I doubt there's anything that could beat them. The hospitality of Barack is what has made me want to do this review. He was an absolute legend who made the whole experience very comfortable. I have done 2 trips to the Kivu’s with Okapi Tours and Travel company, run by Emmanual Munganga. We climbed the Nyiragongo volcano and saw the Mountain Gorillas in the Virunga National Park and also climbed Mount Kahuzi and saw the lowland Gorillas in Kahuzi Biega National Park. Emmanual is a first class host and tour guide, he’s extremely well connected around the region, including Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda and I will definitely use his services again. Amazing... visiting the lava lake was the best thing ever! Would recommend if you are an adventurer brave enough to go to DRC! Armed guards the whole hike so it is safe enough and worth the amazing sight. Solo traveller and never felt worried and met a few people on tour as well. I would highly recommend SCA, not only did Manasse get back to me straight away, he altered the intinery to our requirements as they changed. Among other things they were the cheapest with which to do the gorilla trekking in Uganda that we could find. We did the pick up in Kigali to Bwindi and he was a good $200usd cheaper than anything else we could find, but didn't skimp on service at all. We really wanted to do a volcano hike in Virunga with him as well. But due to outside factors we didn't manage that. But rest assured, when the time comes we will certainly do it with him See more..

I used the fast ferry service between Goma to Bukavu. 50 US $ trip with a 10 kilos baggage allowance. I had to pay 3.5 US $ for an extra 5 kilos. Check-in was well organised, boarding with security check and departure on time for a journey of three hours. Small ferry with probably 40-50 seats in an enclosed cabin. Left Goma on a quiet morning for a beautifull trip. A friend had advised me to sit on the first row - left side where you can stretch your legs, the view is a little limited there.... but still a good tip. And if you want a view you can always go to the outside open deck where i end up spending most the time. Always something to see, as you pass near islands on the lake. Sandwichs and drinks on sale. even if you don't leave Congo, passports are checked both on departure and at arrival in Bukavu. Great trip... would be happy to fo it again. See more..

Christian was unavailable, however his associate Alphonse conducted an extensive tour of Goma. Lots of walking through every part of town with descriptions about the area, some moto rides, a stop for both shopping at a market (where Alphonse assisted in fighting for a fair price) and a beer, it was very relaxed tour which made you feel like you weren't a client but were hitting the town with a friend. Alphonse continued to run into people he knew who were able to add to the depth of the tour and understanding of the city. The tour was a great way to spend a day, especially if you're based in the city to explore the region. I highly recommend this tour. See more..
