Xixi Wetland Park, Zhejiang, China

A must try experience!

This is one of my favorite sightseeing site in Hangzhou. The park is very well designed and maintained. It reminds me of the Everglades of Florida, except that it felt cleaner and is free of alligators. I learned that the park houses flora and fauna. We found a bird watching area where avids can sit inside a hut with benches and lookout holes to wait and spot the different types of birds that make this wetland their home. We also found fruit trees all over the park, including persimmon, pomelo, oranges, etc. The best way to see the park is to walk along the well built trails as well as to take the boat rides. Entrance fee is only 80 RMB for adults. You will need to pay another 60 RMB for the boat ride that make 4 stops within the park.

Little nature in a crowded city
The Xixi Wetland is located to the west of Hangzhou, away from the more famous West Lake. It has a few tributary rivers and possibly man-made canals that offer sanctuary to local flower and fowls. Now famous industrialist like Ma Yun of Alibaba fame and Jet Li of kung fu movie fame are building their own sanctuaries there. The park has many persimmon trees and it is harvesting weeks right now. It has three sections, the East section, the free section, and the Hong garden section. We went to the Hong garden section. They charge 80RMB for the entrance fee, 60RMB if you want to take the boat ride in and out (one-way ride is no longer offered), and 10RMB for a battery car ride. One of the major attractions, the Hong clan mansion and garden, was walled off to be refurbished for a movie set, which caused a lot of confusion and frustration in finding your way around. Seeing all those persimmon hanging off their trees was an unique experience.

    A surprisingly wonderful wetland
A surprisingly wonderful and extensive wetland for an urban location - on the Western edge of Hangzhou city. As a previous reviewer said, it looks like the Everglades but with lotus instead of mangrove and no alligators! Very relaxing place to visit but be warned that it is poorly signposted and quite easy to lose one's bearings. We could only get a Chinese map. Start with an orientation trip on the electric boat, with a thankfully quiet tour guide! Then wander around the roads and paths. The birdwatching area in the middle is especially lovely and the Hong family - the great and good of the area - exhibition is worth a quick visit. You will need most of a day to do Xixi Wetland justice. There is a nice cafe restaurant just inside the West entrance to the park near where the boat docks on its return.
