Nice hiking in beautiful rock mountains
One of the best natural places I could reach from Shanghai. The area is quite large with more gates to enter and there are various trails for hiking. As any other such place in china, the trails ground is manmade. But these are somehow more naturale, not just with thousands of concrete stairs. THese stairs are directly cut in the rock so it looks good and you can reach places that would be normally achieved only with ropes. The views are stunning, so big rocks. The streams are clean and refreshing, with fish in it. Tianmushan is nice, most famous but other places like Huxiao or Water Curtain cave are also worth for hiking. We visited the place when many tourists were gone due to Covid19, so that made the area even better!

Scenic and cultural
Tianmu shan is a beautiful mountain just 83 or so km from Hangzhou zhejiang province. We went to the west side of the mountain, travelled there by car but you can get there with local busses as well from Hangzhou. The hike up is quite steep but plenty opportunities to stop and enjoy the various plants, the giant red cedar, gingko biloba and the unique bamboo that has blue trunk. Many shrines monasteries and temples to pay your respect. There is a nunnery as well but we could not find it and I think you are not supposed to enter. Our descend was a little harder as it started raining and the stones became very slippery but it was a great hike. I recommend it to anyone as you can go to the top by mini bus so to avoid hiking the stairs.

Amazing old growth trees but pricey
If you like big trees such as redwoods, you will be impressed by the remaining giant cryptomeria trees here. Take a bus rather than walk up the mountain, and then stroll around these monster trunks. Plenty of opportunities for getting away from the crowds. Take a bus from Lin'an old bus station (chang tu ke yun zhong xin, near the Qianwang Hotel) to the small town of Yuqian, which is about 1 hour and 7RMB away. From there change buses (one runs every 40 minutes) to get to the West Tianmushan ticket office and resort. Admission 150RMB.
