A must-go place in Hangzhou: Ancient Chinese marketplace

A cozy and interesting place to visit in Hangzhou, walking around, shopping, or having some local street snacks... The economy of the Song Dynasty was the early modern world's most prosperous. As one of the largest cities of Song, Hangzhou boasted a lively street life, with markets, shops, restaurants, and houses right on the street. Hefang Street has been the most flourishing street in the city since ancient time. During the Southern Song Dynasty, Hefang Streen (Qinghefang), with its shops, restaurants, and teahouses was the center of politics, culture and commerce in the city.

Enjoyed Walking Around but the Shops are repetitive
We stayed in a hostel in this area and it was a nice looking area worth checking out with some really good restaurants, artwork and cafes mixed in. The shops are repetitive and you will see the same things over and over with some shops having multiple locations in Hefang alone! The closest metro is Ding'An and cars can drive you up to the edge of the Hefang Street area. Highlight of our visit here was seeing a man walking his pet squirrel.

    Good Shopping and Good Restaurants
The Hefang Street is actually a market with selling stands in its middle and stores and eateries on both sides. Some of them are simply beautiful or really ancient like this 300 year old pharmacy. You can have there complimentary tea and be examined by a Chinese physician who will give you a prescription you'll buy right there. As I wrote there are all kinds of eateries from traditional Chinese cuisine restaurants to the inevitable Starbuck (even more frequent than Mc Donald's). As usual you can buy there all the usual souvenirs although bargaining was not as successful as in Beijing or Huangshan, so be ready for it. Just look at the pictures I have attached as I always do so you can built a better opinion. By the way It could be the starting point of a combo from which you could continue to visit the nearby City God Pavilion (which I have also reviewed here) and then continue the West Lake and its refreshing and quiet area. Bottom line an interesting place, worth the detour if you can make time in Hangzhou, and especially if you combo it with the West Lake and the City God.
