Ordrupgaard, Zealand, Denmark

4.5 (184 reviews) Wednesday: 1:00 PM - 9:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Ranking #1 in Copenhagen Region Art Museums

Difficult to get there, but just worthwhile!

Odrupgaard is an exclusive art museum with a collection that includes names such as Monet, Gauguin, Matisse, Renoir and Hammershoi. Initially, the museum building served as a manor house. You can still sense the atmosphere throughout the old rooms and the park. Additionally, you can experience temporary exhibitions and (on weekends) visit the renowned Danish architect Finn Juhl's house which is a part of the museum. The sculptural extensional adjacent building is designed by the internationally acclaimed architect Zaha Hadid. How to get there: Take the S-train to Klampenborg or Lyngby Station, and then take bus 388 to Vilvordevej. It is a 2-minute walk from there to the museum.

A good mix of architecture and art
I would recommend a visit to Ordrupgaard for the mix of architecture and art, which ranges from 19th century to contemporary in a setting and on a scale that is manageable. You do feel like they are carrying on the contemporary spirit of Wilhelm and Henny Hansen. First, there's the architecture. There's the Zaha Hadid addition (2005), the first major building by a foreign architect in Denmark since the end of the 18th century. There's also the chance to experience the Snøhetta addition, which houses the French Impressionist collection. The original building is also quite handsome, and the Finn Juhl house, with all of its Danish mid-century furniture, rounds out the collection. Second, the art collection is interesting because it's a chance to see a personal 19th century Danish painting collection in a home, French Impressionist paintings (we see a lot of those in our part of the U.S., so not as interesting), and some fun contemporary installations on the grounds. Climbing the Doug and Mike Starn Big Bambú installation is great for both children and adults. For us, it was also a way to see a pleasant Danish neighborhood. We took the S train from downtown, got off at Ordrup, and walked the mile to the museum. We cut through the Ordrup Cemetery, made a short stop at the GN Brandts Garden, and followed the public trail to the museum. The cafe is decent and in the beautiful Hadid addition. Warning: The food can be very slow if you get there during the rush.

Remote location worth going for more than a few more-than-good paintings
How to get there: 1.Use the journey planner Rajseplanen when planning a visit; it helps especially since Bus 388 runs only every 30 minutes! 2.Take the s-train (line C) to Klampenborg from Kobenhavn H (Copenhagen Central Station). 3. Upon alighting at Klampenborg Station, cross the road to take Bus 388 (going towards Lyngby St). 4.If you've checked Rajseplanen beforehand, you shouldn't have to wait long for Bus 388. 5.Do ask the bus driver to alert you (almost all the Danish I've met are very nice and helpful people so do ask with a smile) as to when you should alight-let him know your destination: Vilvordevej, Ordrupgaard or better still, show him in writing unless you speak Danish well. He'll announce the stop so you can press the bell and get off; the bus doesn't stop at every bus stop so trying to spot or worse still, missing the stop is painful. 6.Cross the road, walk for about 5 minutes and voila, you're there! What to see: Landscape paintings and still life among others by Pissarro, Monet, Degas, Manet, Armand Guillaumin, Charles-Francois Daubigny, Jules Dupre and Paul Cezanne among others. P.S. The cafe is in a nice, soothing and quiet place close to nature.
