Great

Our museum was established in order to raise the cult of Lake Balaton. Ever since our goals have remained the same, yet modern: we research and publicize the “Hungarian sea” by collecting, preserving, processing and presenting the natural values of Lake Balaton. We do not want to tell everything about Balaton, but we would like to show the major characteristics through which the lake and its history can be known. Our museum provides a comprehensive and public context in order to understand the environmental and social changes of the Balaton region. Our permanent exhibition recalls the history of the lake through eleven rooms. Our historical, archeological, ethnographic and natural history collections consist of 380. 000 items.

History of Balaton and surrounding area
If you are at the Balaton I do recommend you pay a visit to this museum to get more knowledge about the lake, its history and what is around it. The exhibition starts with presenting the ancient times and how the lake was formed explaining its origins, you also have some samples of the wild life living in its waters - fish and amphibians - on the shores and in the woods around the lake... so you get a full picture. Than you get presented the human settlements from antiquity , the roman period ,very interesting and than moving on to the period with the arrival of the Huns and their establishment in the area , first villages after the roman era , etc. so the whole picture of history and life near this "sea" of Hungary. As you move from room to room you can follow the time line to the modern era , you have exhibits of fishing tools and their evolution over the centuries as fishing was the main occupation of the people leaving in the area, than the modern times, tourism in the Communist era, sailing and navigation on the lake , different models of ships that sailed the waters of Balaton. If you care for the audio guiding of the tour you will find a lot of interesting information, so you need to spend a little more time to get through this museum. We've spent 2 hours here - but this is up to every visitor to decide how much time they want to spend. In terms of parking here you will have to find a spot on the street since the museum does not have a parking lot in a courtyard , just outside on the street. In terms of entrance fee is just a few euros - when we were there we could not use credit card so be prepared with cash - they accept also Euro not only Huf. Overall to sum it up - it is interesting and it is time well spent visiting this museum.

    Balaton areas history
This is a very interesting museum to visit. There are multimedia means to look at and listen to the history. There is a permanent exhibition containing Hungarian and English language on information boards. Unfortunately there are some extra displays that are only written in Hungarian. If your children like history then they will find it interesting especially early life in the area. But otherwise it is not really for them. There is a modern outdoor wooden play area which young children will enjoy. There is also a representation of how the lake could be non-existent within 200 years. Thank fully I will not be around then. If you happen to be in Hungary on one of the important national days then all the museums are free, otherwise you have to pay. Please read the review by Tiberiu Baranyi the explanation of the museum, it is excellent.
