Great Lake for a lovely tour

A beautiful lake with fresh water and safe for canoeing or swimming. We did a lake tour by motor boat with a guide called Robin who took us on a beautiful Short hike to have a view over the lake and it’s islands and tell us about the area. He also showed us 4 islands and we got off and did a walk on some . We learnt so many stories about each island and he finally dropped us at the island with our lodge. Great experience so I would recommend asking for him.

    A beautiful lake in Uganda
We stayed at an eco-friendly lodge after our trek at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The resort offers a boat tour of the lake with local guide. The lake and surrounding areas are beautiful. We learned that all of the houses and lodges are solar powered. There is one privately owned island that has electricity. It is a beautiful place to stay. I would go back to visit when I had more time ?.

Attractive lake dotted with small islands
We stayed for a slower paced 2 nights as part of our safari trip, after our gorilla trek at Bwindi. The lake is large and dotted with 29 small islands. The most popular activity is to take a guided boat ride around the lake and its islands. One of them is called Punishment Island, where young pregnant, unmarried girls were dumped and left to die. Another has an eco lodge you can stay at or simply visit for 20,000 UGX pp for 45min guided hike, with some wild zebra, impala and kob, plus donkeys. Many of them are inhabited by a few families and farmed. You can also take a boat to visit the Batwa Pygmy Tribe. These are people who choose to live in isolation and are very poor - shockingly so. You will need to make a donation (they will put on a little traditional song and dance show for you) and if you can take a gift (perhaps children's clothes, school supplies, simple toy) it will be most welcomed. We stayed at Arcardia Cottages, (reviewed separately), overlooking the lake, where you can find the best view. You can walk from the shore and back quire safely, although one way will be quite steep. It takes about an hour each way or you can get a motorbike taxi (will take 2). If the weather is good (the lake has a temperate climate rather than a hot one as quite high) the lake is fine for swimming, although whilst we were there it was quite cold and cloudy and we had some heavy rain.
