    We visited The Mountaineer Military Museum during a visit to Lewis County which I consider my ancestral home my great grandfather having been born here in 1842. We were given a tour which was conducted by Barbara McVaney. She and her husband Ron founded the museum in 2003 which is currently located in the Weston Historic Colored School. The museum has hundreds of photographs of West Virginians (plus one Pennsylvanian) who served in the armed forces during wars from the colonial times up to the present. It houses military memorabilia and artifacts from these wars as well. The McVaneys have done a marvelous job with this museum. Their dedication to and passion for this effort is clear to all who visit this museum. It is well worth a visit. See more..

    This is a terrific museum, especially for such a small town. It is located in the old Rowlesburg High School, which is an old-fashioned, historic building worth seeing in and of itself. On the weekends, there is a great soda shop/cafe open in the building, too, with good (often homemade) things to eat. There is also a little shop on the same floor of the school that has all kinds of fun things for sale (at a good prices, too). There's also a train room/museum in the school. It's VERY fun stop - all practically on the bank of the Cheat River. Walk over to the town park and let the kids play on the playground while you watch the river go by. Perfect day. Do not miss!
