Captain Obvious strikes again! Heeyuzzahh!!!

We checked out the Regional History State Museum in Uralsk last week while in the city, it is a showcase of the regional history (Captain Obvious) but seemingly empty of people except some very helpful staff. There was a school group that came through about half way during our time in there but aside from them and a few stragglers here and there we essentially had it to ourselves. Certainly not complaining about that at all as we were able to take our time walking through the exhibits and reading all we could to learn more about the history from early days, through the revolution, world wars and through to today. Our understanding of Kazakh is still a bit rough but we managed to understand a fair amount more than we thought. Great set up, nice museum, friendly/patient staff and we would highly recommend that you visit if you get the chance.

    Some interesting displays
We visited on a Sunday afternoon. The building exterior is quite attractive, with stairs leading up to an imposing door. We weren't sure if it was open when we entered, but two staff met us and indicated where we should leave our coats. Other museum staff led us through the galleries, turning the lights on for us (and presumably off after we left the gallery) - I've never had an entire museum opened for me before! There were three galleries on the ground floor and three more on the upper floor, presenting artifacts and documents from prehistory up the present. The prehistoric gallery is the most impressive, and displays jewelry and other grave goods in cases arranged around a mannequin dressed in replicas of the items. The other galleries on the ground floor contain models of a settlement (I assume Uralsk or proto-Uralsk - the display was in Kazakh and Russian) and various archaeological finds. Upstairs there are some very fine weapons and armour, and displays about the history of West Kazakhstan from 1900 through the Russian Revolution and the Second World War. There is also a gallery dedicated to the life of President Nazarbayev, which has information in English. There were some very fine articles on display. I did not learn as much as I could have because I don't read Kazakh or Russian (which is my fault, not the museum's), but I still feel it was worth visiting.
