NEMU

Another small but good museum in Uralsk that we visited recently was the Nature and Ecology Museum. Only three rooms but some cool flora and fauna and former flora and fauna from the area including dinosaurs, mammoths and butterflies which are beautiful. No English labels so we got as much as we could while we were there, tag-teaming with our language skills but worth a look even if you can’t read the labels.

    Small but interesting
I'm interested in the ecology of Kazakhstan, so when I was in Uralsk I made a point of visiting this museum. It is quite small, only three rooms. The first room displays fossils and skeletons, including two dinosaur skulls and bones from a mammoth. There is also part of a woolly rhino. The second room contains stuffed mammals, birds, and fishes. I was most interested by the wild boars and a large sturgeon. The third room is much smaller and has a collection of butterflies and moths, and more birds. All labels are in Russian and Kazakh - no English - but the displays are interesting to look at. Worth dropping by if you are in the area. The entrance is off the courtyard of 151/2 Dostyk, not on the street.
