On your marks, get set, go back in time!

I visited Olympia with a coach tour group, and our day started with a guided tour of the museum and the site itself. Our guide was very informative and enthusiastic about her subject. Because of Covid restrictions, the museum part of the tour was quite short, but we were able to reuse our tickets later on. The site was fascinating. My favourite parts were the spot from where the Olympic Flame starts its epic journey, and the arena.

    Ancient Ruins of Olympia
We were terrifically fortunate to have an opportunity to enjoy this site on 2/27/2020 before Covid-19 virus contagion exploded worldwide and tourism got shut down. The birthplace of the Olympic Games began here in 776 BC. We saw fallen stones and columns everywhere. There were mixtures of Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine structures. The remains of Temple of Zeus still stood proud though many massive columns have fallen. The entrance to the stadium is an archway where the roof have eroded away over time. The stadium is sloped down to open field and does not have any stands or seats. In ancient time, both competitors and fans were naked. The Olympic flame is still generated here for each of the modern games today. That location was not much to look but the we can see areas where the rocks were charred.

Don't skip the museum when seeing the site
It is worth coming to Olympia just to see the Hermes statue. It is almost alive, the work of true genius. The recreation of the pediment statues is wonderful, too. You can get so close. It give you a better idea of what it looks like than what you can see at the Acropolis Museum. An hour is sufficient to view the museum.
