Hiking Richloam South
This is by far THE BEST trailhead I've ever experienced. There are no restrooms, no picnic tables, no amenities except one spigot with potable water. There is, however, a fire tower! Not just a fire tower.. One that you can actually climb! At your own risk, of course, but unlocked, sturdy, and all the way to the cabin on top. Spectacular views in every direction. Happy! Happy! Happy! This is also the trailhead to several different loop trails. I chose to hike Richloam South with my puppy Buc on a beautiful winter morning. This loop is 12.5 miles and traverses some pretty amazing Florida terrain. Lots of wildlife, mostly birds. It's still hunting season and everything furry is hiding. Wonderful day hiking in the Withlacoochee State Forest and all for FREE. Highly recommended!

Swamp hunt
Hog hunting in a peaceful area with lots of shade. Wear gators, the thorns are plentiful and the mud is thick.

Richloam WMA is the best!
I'm back with Trailmaster Buc and we had the best day ever. Started out at the fire tower and YES you can still climb it! I believe it's the last remaining climbable fire tower in the state. Next we took my 4x4 truck down Riverland Rd to the broken bridge over Little Withlacoochee River. Crossable on foot but not by vehicle. The road then loops around through the forest all the way to 471. Amazing drive but I wouldn't attempt it without a 4x4. Drove back to the trailhead and hiked the East Loop trail. It's approximately 10 miles through the same terrain that we just drove. Beautiful, natural Florida. By the time we finished the loop, Richloam General Store was open. I just love this old store. Another wonderful day in the forest. Excellent place to unplug and get in touch with nature. Highly recommend and FREE!
