Interesting museum

It's always interesting to me to go to local area history museums, this one was worth the time. Great depiction of time and experiences from the past. Fresnel lens, coast guard rescue boat, crew quarters and whale skeleton exhibits were highlights.

    Excellent docents
This is a good stop to learn about Westport's maritime past with an emphasis on their Coast Guard history. The museum isn't exciting, but it has a quiet dignity. I especially enjoyed receiving the docent-guided tour of the old Fresnel light taken from the retired off-shore lighthouse. That was a treat! After the museum stop we were drawn by the barking of the sea lions, so we walked across the road and down into the marina to see probably 60 or so of them piled onto the float/pier enjoying a late-afternoon gab fest. Amazing! I expect the tourists love them, but likey the locals are pretty tired of them and maybe wish they'd go away. If you go visit them, remember that the law requires you stay back from them at least 100 feet.

    Family favorite
Growing up, just visiting the outside was always a must. I don't go every time, but it was fun taking my (now grown) son there when he was little. I was in town for a girl's weekend, and we were happy to see it was open (covid and all) unfortunately, we were there very late, and didn't get to experience the whole thing. The gentleman in charge for the day, let us come in any way with a promise that we would not overstay the time. All of us had been before at some time (doesn't change that much year to year) , and for several of us, it was more of a walk down memory lane. We appreciated the opportunity to be giddy school girls again, and even if the visit was short, it was worth it. If you have a few minutes, it is well worth the time, and if you have littles, give them some time and talk to them about all of the wonderful things. There is lots of interactive exhibits, and wonderful information. It is truly a must see.
