Very cool!
Three miles east of Maryhill Museum of Art, just off HWY 14 and near the original Maryhill town site, stands a full-scale replica of England's Stonehenge built by museum founder Sam Hill. Stonehenge Memorial was built as the nation’s first WWI memorial. It was dedicated in 1918 to the servicemen of Klickitat County, Washington, who died in the service of their country during the Great War; it was completed in 1929 and re-dedicated on Memorial Day of that year, when 14 local service men were honored by having their names placed on the pillars of the Memorial. Samuel Hill’s crypt is located a short walk southwest of Stonehenge on a bluff overlooking the river. The site is open daily from 7 a.m. to dusk. Admission is free.

An elective construction project….
…… is the resting emotional state of the rich. Samuel Hill (1857-1931) certainly had the money and the bright idea, but probably lacked the imagination to do the thing properly, using pre-cast blocks of concrete aggregate to build his replica of Wiltshire’s Stonehenge in an imaginatively perfect state on a bluff high above the Columbia River rather than using solid granite from Preseli in Welsh Wales. Having said that, it is a glorious thing, nonetheless. The location knocks spots off dreary old Salisbury Plain, and the lack of visitors and the consequent ‘amenities’ is excellent, while the cost of entrance is negligible, only that incurred in getting there. The rustic condition and location with Mt Hood looming magnificently on the horizon makes this a moving memorial to the sacrifices of war.

Great Views
This is a scale replica of Stonehenge built to memorialize the men from this area who died in WW1. That alone is fascinating. The views are incredible as you have a great view up and down the Columbia Gorge. It is at most a 10 minute side trip off I84. A few things to note. First it was insanely windy here so while the day was not terribly cold it was bitter at the memorial, bring a jacket. Second, there are no facilities here at all. There is a small picnic table but it has no shade or shelter from the wind. Finally, there were no trash cans anywhere on the site. We walked our dog (not on the memorial) and had nowhere to dispose of the baggie afterwards and had to pack it out. Overall, the site is well worth the brief detour if you are traveling down the gorge.
