I would NEVER recommend Skipper's to anyone

I called Skipper's Horse Rental well in advance of our trip to the coast with the express purpose of riding on the beach. I signed our party of four experienced riders up for the 2 hour ride for a Saturday. I called 2 weeks before our scheduled trip to change it to Sunday as I heard the weather was going to be bad on the original day. I was told that was no problem and just make sure we were there a half hour before the ride was to start. We arrived 45 minutes early as we were so excited. No one showed up, so I finally called the number. Skipper told me, "Yeah the storm made quite a mess so I'm not gonna show up today." When I questioned him further about why he couldn't have even given me a call to let me know, his response was, "Well hell, I didn't know it was gonna make such a mess". Not once did he even apologize for our inconvenience of traveling over 500 miles to ride with his outfit. When I told him I was going to leave a review to the effect that it was a poor way to do business, he told me that he didn't care and he was done talking to me. He hung up on me. I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY TO ANYONE! Very unprofessional and rude. The corrals were very shabby as well, so I doubt they take much pride in their horses either. There was another group of 6 that were in the same situation that Skip left us in. I went across the street to Backcountry Outfitters and they were awesome!!!! Saved our trip and everyone was extremely friendly. Go to Backcountry Outfitters to ride on the beach!

    Call the ASPCA
We found this place on the web and were excited to ride on the beach. It's early in the season, so many places only operate on weekends. Upon arriving, we were a little disheartened by the conditions of the "facility." I use that term very loosely as the location consists of a mobile horse coral and a shack with three people crammed in. The entire place appeared to be very worn down and in disarray. Most of the horses were sitting down (I now know a huge warning sign). The two of us riders were "paired" with a horse and were off in a matter of minutes with two "guides." Our horses both required considerable coaxing to get them to even get up on their feet. All the horses were wet and muddy. Upon questioning, our horses were 26 and 16 years old. The guides horses were both under 10 years old. The "guides" paired me (200#) with the 26 year old horse and my 100# friend with the "younger" horse. For the entire ride the 26 year old horse walked slower than the rest, bottom lip drooping, requiring the other riders to stop and wait periodically. This horse would sometimes trot to catch up on his own, but never once responded to instructions to do so by me. On the return leg of the trip, he walked even slower, frequently attempting to stop, requiring the guide to nudge him along. I honestly felt the horse was going to just stop and die on the beach. On several occasions the "guides" would gallop around and take little diversions from the set route with their younger more capable horses, almost flaunting just how sad our horses were in comparison. I readily admit that I do not know the laws for animal care in this state, nor do I know what is an acceptable minimum for horse care or age to work a horse. I will say that following this experience, this operation appears to be really pushing that limit. I left with a sinking feeling in my stomach about their condition.
