The kiss by Vienna

The two Belvedere palaces were built in the early eighteenth century by the famous Baroque architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt to be used as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663–1736). One of Europe’s most stunning Baroque landmarks, this ensemble – comprising the Upper and Lower Belvedere and an extensive garden – is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today the Belvedere houses the greatest collection of Austrian art dating from the Middle Ages to the present day, complemented by the work of international artists such as Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, and Max Beckmann. Highlights from the holdings Vienna 1880–1914 are the world’s largest collection of Gustav Klimt’s paintings (including the famous golden Art Nouveau icons the Kiss (Lovers) and Judith) and works by Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. Key works of French Impressionism and the greatest collection of Viennese Biedermeier art are further attractions on display at the Upper Belvedere.

    Well worth a visit
We visited in early March and the crowds were very manageable. The queue progressed very quickly and there was plenty of space and time to view each exhibit, including Klimt paintings. Fabulous wetting and this was very accessible via tram D. We would have stayed longer, to view the gardens and Lower Palace but time did not permit. I would definitely re-visit on a future trip.

    Belvedere Museum Complex is impressive
This is an amazing museum "complex" with a lovely garden in between the two museums (upper and lower). I arrived late in the day, already max'd out on art, so I really wasnt able to give it its due. That being said the collection is impressive and I will need to return. The "upper" Belvedere houses most of the work I wanted to see but because I hadnt purchased a ticket in advance I was compelled to buy a ticket for an hour later and spent the first hour wandering around the lower Belvedere. Since I traveled in December the upper Belvedere was way crowded so perhaps there are hours when the museum would be more empty. In December there is a festive Xmas market just outside the museum so you can grab a bite and a drink if you like. Vegetarians, beware, you are in a country of meat eaters. But do visit these museums.
