Indian River Citrus Museum, Florida, United States

Great for what it is!

This is a very small museum packed full of interesting stuff. Our hostess (tour guide?) greeted us at the front door & gave us about 15 minutes worth of wonderful local history, general information on citrus worldwide, & information specific to citrus grown in the copyrighted Indian River Citrus area. Then, we were free to wander the remainder of the displays. The layout was simple - just a rectangular room with a center display area - but the displays were such that it didn't feel cramped or overstuffed. We learned a great deal about the area, & were impressed with our guide's knowledge & enthusiasm. There is no admission fee, but there is a donation jar on the "gift shop" counter, & they have various items of interest for sale. (We bought postcards & marmalade!)

Are orange trees planted in groves or rows?
Each year for Christmas I send family members fruit from the Indian River Citrus farms. This March my brother-in-law asked about picking your own fruit or finding out about the fruit farms. We had a day planned for visiting Vero Beach and discovered this museum. Plan for an hour for your visit. It is small, but the gentleman who conducted the tour did a marvelous job and all of us enjoyed our tour and learned a lot about the history of Florida’s famous citrus fruits. Had this tour guide not been so informative and interesting, I would have probably missed many of the details. I encourage American history buffs and fruit lovers to visit and learn at this museum. Do you know why the orange groves started in Florida? Did you know how much of the Indian River Crop is exported from the US? What is happening to the orange groves in Florida? What is the land from former orange groves being used for today? What are you given when you leave the museum?

    Very Interesting
A small building with lots and lots of cultural information pertaining to Indian River Oranges. The docent was terrific. She certainly loves her job and she made it so very interesting. Very enjoyable for any age. There isn't a fee to enter but a tip jar is on the counter.
