Impressive

A museum for a university from arund year 800. Impressive in it self, but the way the church was built that now houses the museum is also impressive.

    Superb small museum
The contents of this museum are skillfully laid out in an old Monastery and some of the illuminated manuscripts are breath taking and beautiful to see. If you appreciate art this place is a must. If the museum is closed as it was when we visited ask the lady next door for the key. She is very obliging and may even offer you a bunch of grapes!

Charming Museum in an Idyllic location to explore
Locally known as Sourp Hakob Church Museum or Gladzor University Museum, a charming display of manuscripts that reveal the history of monastic life and learning in medieval Armenia, with explanations in English, Armenian and Russian. Ask the house next door and you may find an English-speaking guide available. Gladzor University is said to be the first multi-faculty university, older than Oxford and Cambridge Universities. A pleasant 1 ¼ hour walk through from Yeghegnadzor, through Gladzor and Vernashen villages, and you can continue for another hour through the mountains to arrive at Tanahat, the original site of Gladzor University. On the way get spectacular views, including Ararat. Another one hour walk will take you to Sourp Khach Church, perched on a mountain top, where Mass is occasionally served. If you continue, you will end up at Malishka Village.
