Incredibly picturesque
If you are an art enthusiast and like to paint and draw you should plan to spend some time here. It is such a picturesque town that you can spend hours drawing and painting or photographing the beautiful houses, streets, river, nature, and environs of Porvoo. You can also buy some real art (and even the beautiful vintage Arabia ceramic ware) in a number of small and unique antique shops. I also recommend visiting the “Art Factory Porvoo” to see some interesting exhibition of contemporary Finnish artists. To reach the Factory you walk on the pleasant promenade along the Porvoo River for 10-15’ then cross a bridge until you reach Läntinen Aleksanterinkatu 1.

Wonderful
Six towns were established in Finland during the Middle Ages. Some of them grew to be towns without any official order having been issued. This was the case with Porvoo, which got the town rights after Turku in the 14th century. The story tells that in 1346 Maunu Eerikinpoika (Magnus Eriksson), then the King of Sweden, visited Porvoo and granted the town rights there and then. The Porvoo Castle was built on the hill and the town was named Borgå (“castle river”) in Swedish. The Porvoo parish and the church originated in the 13th century. The church was first built of wood, later of stone. It was founded high on the hill to dominate the town!

Like a fairytale.
I'll keep this short and sweet. The old town is located wonderfully. It's alleys lined with adorable shops ranging from selling crafts, souvenirs and local products to lovely coffee shops and restaurants. The colours, the architecture, the cobblestone roads....all visually amazing. Luckily for us, our B&B was located in the old town so we woke so happy. Just go. You'll not regret it!
