Great Views
We walked up after seeing the cathedral which is only a stone's throw away. It's a nice walk up and when at the top you have some nice views of the city below. Can imagine it would be lovely in summer for picnics etc. Worth going up and taking a few pics :)

A Short Hike
If you like overviews of historic and charming places, it is recommended that you take the short hike up the cobble stone streets to Castle Hill. On Castle Hill is the Lutheran cathedral.

A historical site with beautiful views
Linnamäki Castle Hill is situated next to Porvoo Old Town (only some hundred meters) and it is one of Finland's best-preserved castle hills. However, you don't see any castle here, only old moats. A wooden wall may have been built at the top of these moats. Defenders and attackers shot crossbow bolts here and some bolts have been discovered on the hill. In medieval times the castle on this hill dominated the River Porvoonjoki. The first wooden castle was probably built in the late 13th century. During the 14th century Linnamäki Castle Hill was modernized. Moats were fortified and a wooden bailiff's castle was built on the hilltop. This castle was probably demolished and abandoned around the year 1400. During the Great Northern War (around 1713) Russians had a gun post on the top of Linnamäki Castle Hill. Battles raged on both sides of the River Porvoonjoki. Besides history I also loved the beautiful view from the hill. You can see the Cathedral of Porvoo and the River Porvoonjoki from here. Our teens loved running and "fighting" here. Remember to visit the adjacent Maari Park, too. There was an ancient harbor there. People lived here as early as in the Iron Age. Archaeologists have found old graves here. People were laid to rest with their weapons or jewelleries. All this is very intriguing!
