Bell tower
St. Joris kerk (St Georges church) is the largest church in Amersfoort and sits in the main square (the Hof). Not too exciting on the inside but a few times a day about two minutes after the clock has struck the hour figures of St George and the dragon come out of the small bell tower at the front of the church and St George proceeds to slay the dragon. Rather entertaining.

Two beautiful frescoes
This church has two frescoes at the altar that were rescued from the outside walls. Unfortunately, they are very damaged, but what remains is really astounding. One is a picture of St. George killing the dragon, the other of Jesus and St. Veronica. This is Dutch renaissance painting at its best. The horse and the rider are magnificent. The head of one of the soldiers in the other painting reminds me of the exquisite Alexander mosaic from Pompeii. For these two paintings alone it’s worth visiting the church.

Beautiful organ
The formerly Catholic church has become a Protestant Church, so most of the artwork and stained glass has been taken out (so worshippers will focus on the Word). All of which makes the atmosphere a little chilly if you're accustomed to, say, Spanish or Italian church architecture. But well, this is part of Dutch culture, as is witnessed by some famaous paintings. But the wide empty space is filled by a huge organ, complete with golden trumpet-toting angels. Concerts are regularly organized, and Holland has no dearth of talented organists.
