Beautiful Drive!
We drove over the Zion-Mt. Carmel Hwy several times during our visit. Our favorite drive time was early morning to catch the sunrise that was spectacular over the mountains. The kids really enjoyed the tunnel as well. It is a bit curvy so if you have a passenger that struggles with motion sickness I would not recommend this route.

Most scenic drive of our trip
We entered and exited Zion NP this way and it is stunning! On our way in, we entered around 11 AM and the drive was definitely busy and slow-going. There was a 15 minute wait for the tunnel. You are basically driving right through the red rocks and the scenery was breathtaking and out of this world. I loved Scenic Byway 12, but this was even better than that! When we left the park, it was 8 AM and this highway was basically empty. No wait for the tunnel, no traffic. So even if you aren't planning to leave this way, if you want a nice, peaceful drive through this amazing scenery with no traffic, consider going out early in the morning and just turning around maybe at Checkerboard Mesa. Also the oversized vehicles can only pay to go through the tunnel 8a-8p, so going before 8 AM means not having to wait while the tunnel closes down.
