The number one hike in the USA ! 10/18/22
We started hiking at 10am and beat the sunshine most of the way up, and while the temperature was enjoyable, the hike generates heat. The trip up took us an hour and 15 minutes to Scout's Lookout, the top that we were allowed to hike, and an hour to come down after we ate lunch and one of us went to the top of Angel's Landing. My daughter Nicole went to the summit and back in about 45 minutes, with time spent up there. People were clipping on to the safety chains and even with 'required' permits through a lottery system, the traffic was a bit heavy in both directions along the chains. We saw a park ranger come down, but no enforcing was done. It cost $6 to apply for the permit for your group the day before, then a per person fee to actually get the permit if you won the lottery. The views are spectacular and the hike seemed like a lot more than the 21 advertised switchbacks. The sign at the top warns you of the 13 deaths since 2004. The drop offs can leave you weak in the knees. We got down about 2pm. There were a lot fewer people going up at that time of day.

Don't count on getting past Scout's Landing in the summer!
This is such a beautiful hike with kids (ours are ages 10 - 15). We arrived at 7:15 am and the park was already full - had to park outside for $40. Don't forget your masks to ride the shuttle! We had 8:00 shuttle tickets and got on right at 8:00. Don't wait in the long line if you have tickets! Head to the right front of the line and you'll get priority. The hike from the Grotto stop up to Scout's Landing was lovely with little spots in the cliffs for the kids to climb in. My husband and two of our kids wanted to try to get to Angel's Landing. After about 30 minutes, they were able to make their way up the very first stretch with chains. They waited..and waited...and waited to be able to go farther, but it was too crowded and nobody was moving. People were standing still across the narrow part with no movement. 45 minutes later, they just made their way back down to Scout's Landing. We think this will need to go to a lottery system. It was so crowded (early Monday morning in June). If one person fell, they would take several people with them.
