Jangsaengpo Whale Museum, Ulsan, South Korea
4.0 (92 reviews) Spent Ranking #7 in Ulsan Speciality Museums
Entrance fee 2000 korean won/person
Learn history of whale hunting in Korea and whale related products. Exhibition of whale skeletons and whale fetus. Luckily whale hunting is prohibited in Korea since sometime in ‘80s. I would love to see some future aspect of the whales with focusing on whale protections, pollutions in oceans and environmental issues in order to educate adults as well as small children.

Good way to spend a few hours on an off day
I originally wanted to take the whale watching tour, but found out since I was a visitor, I had to register with the coast guard and provide certain documentation. No one there could explain where to go to register, etc., so I settled for the museum. Interesting exhibits (I like history) and excellent history/views of how Ulsan has developed over the years. Dolphin show was really cool. Some signs were in both Korean and English, but some were just in Korean. 4D theater was average, and since I don't speak Korean, had to make a lot of assumptions on what was being said. You'd get it, though, so it was worth the few extra bucks to sit down in AC and get misted with a bit of water and air. Nice petting zoo type thingy on the room with all kinds of critters to view and some to touch. Highlight, I guess, was going across the street and actually eating whale. From what we gathered, we had some fin and some belly. Wasn't bad at all, but once is probably enough.

All about 'Whale'
Jangsaengpo area was the place of active whaling until it was prohibited in 1986 and then was designated as Jangsaengpo Special Whale Culture Zone in 2008. At Jangsaengpo Whale Museum and Whale Life Experience Museum, visitors can gain some knowledge of whales and see whale bones and models. They can also enjoy various activities such as whale watching cruise tours to see whales swimming in the sea, and visiting Whale Culture Village where old Jangsaengpo village is restored to its heyday state. The district attracts many visitors as a great experiential and sightseeing course for youth, providing scientific experiences and history education at the same time. May 31, 2005, Opened Ticketing time - 09:30 to 17:30 / Opening time - 09:30 to 18:00 Closed on Mondays, New Year's Day, the following day of national holiday You can purchase tickets at the ticket office (main entrance adult \ 2,000) The second floor of the Jangsaengpo Whale Museum is on display of Whale skeleton and it was really big. Also, small and large skeletons, and jawbones, and Ulsan landform change were displayed. Especially when I entered the 3rd exhibition theaters, the images came out automatically and I thought that the system was quite good. Each exhibition was explained well in Korean and also in EnglishThere is a well-explained explanation beside the exhibit of the history museum, and it was amazing to see not only the young children and the parents who came with them but also the foreign tourists, and it was explained in English as well as Korean. What impressed me was the detail of how it was used to dismantle the old whale. In fact, whale meat was used in a variety of places.
