Red Lotus Lake, Udon Thani Province, Thailand

4.5 (284 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Chiang Haeo Bodies of Water

Worth the visit

We visited the Red Lotus Lake, which is about 40-45 mins drive from Udon Thani city centre, in January 2020. There are a few area to take the boat ride, and we think the old jetty is better location as there’s less crowd and the water lilies are pretty close to the shore. Try to arrive before sunrise and you will get to enjoy the amazing sunrise with lots of pink water lilies. Small boat cost THB300 for an hour (for two people). Beautiful place to visit while in Northeast Thailand during winter months (Dec-Feb)

Nice view and a must do when you at Udon Thani!
It is a must when you at Udon Thani. This lotus lake is from December to February only. If you are not driving on your own, you can book a half day trip from your hotel. Just in case you hotel do not have the contact and this service, you can book from Udonbackparkers Beds and Cafe (see photo for their FB messenger). The price I pay for 1 person is THB599 and it is including the boat. The boat is bigger plastic type, not the wooden smaller type. The journey from Udon Thani town to the lake is about 1 hour and it must be in the morning.

    Great weekend away
We have been to this amazing lake a few times now, we love the amazing scenery of these thousands of flowers which makes great photos. I am not a morning person and this trip requires an early start as the photos are best at sunrise but the awesome views make it worthwhile. Another reason to get up early is that the flowers close up when the heat of the day kicks in. Locals have told us that it is a myth that the flowers only open during the short winter season, they say the flowers are there all year just a bit less outside the peak season. Last time we enjoyed the annual trip more by staying a couple of days at a newly opened accommodation, Bua Daeng Homestay, which is very close to the lake. Very handy so you don't have to get up in the middle of the night with only a couple of minutes to drive from the accommodation to the lake.
