4.5Wartburg Castle(1.279 reviews) - Better than expected Monday: 8:30 AM - 8:00 PM Castles
This imposing medieval fortress, which stands atop a mountain on the outskirts of Eisenach, is best known as the place where Martin Luther sought refuge following his excommunication in 1521 and serves as one of Germany's most prolific national symbols.See more..

Perched upon a hill to the south of Weimar in the middle of a spacious park with an orangery, pleasure garden and labyrinth lies Belvedere Castle, the former Baroque summer residence of the ducal family of Saxony-Weimar and Eisenach. Since 1923 the castle has been used as a museum of the arts and crafts dating back to the 18th century, featuring exquisite porcelain works once owned by Weimar’s ducal dynasty.See more..
It was my second visit over years. I would come again if I have a chance. One can see and learn a lot. Audio-guide was very informative. Much about history, some stunning rooms and objects of art. It is quite chic, showing a major European monarchy hub at its highest power and luxury.See more..
4.5Stadtschloss(128 reviews) - A must when in Weimar Temporarily closed - Closed until further notice Spent 2-3 hours Architectural Buildings • Castles • History Museums
This place is temporarily closed. The former residence of the grand ducal family of Saxony-Weimar and Eisenach possesses a rich and eventful history. For many centuries, the castle represented the cultural heart of the city. It was here that the artistically-minded Ernestine dynasty lived and ruled for almost 400 years in the company of famous poets, philosophers, artists and composers. The first phase of a major renovation project at the Weimar City Castle began in summer 2018. A new Klassik Stiftung Weimar visitor centre on the ground floor will be completed in the following years. Large sections of the castle will be opened to visitors free of charge. On the upper-level belétage, curators are busy developing a new exhibition which includes rooms which have never been opened to the public before. Following the grand re-opening, visitors can look forward to fascinating stories that took place inside and “behind the scenes” of the castle.See more..
This castle/palace is really nice place to visit. Its location on the top of a hill dominating the town is an advantage, of course. Inside it is eclectic which is reflecting on castle growing from century to century and, also, various alterations fue to fires, etc. When I visited in November they did not have audioguide or a guided tour in English. However, they gave me a detailed brochure explaining history of the place and various rooms in English. You can only visit, though, with a guide, who has to open all the doors. The church, the ball hall and specifically the Bach hall in German renaissance style are marvelous. Walk across part towards Orangerie and Lindenau museum (which has small but great collection).See more..
4.5Schloß Wilhelmsburg(53 reviews) - Historic, but not much in it Monday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Castles
Historic castle, nice views, interesting architecture, but I whish they would put more in it, make it into a proper museum, it's just a bit empty.See more..
A great castle to visit and view, that you won't find on the map! Entrance for the cheap price of only 2.50 Euro. Well worth the money. Partially restored, and partially in ruins. Compares well with other great ruined castles I've seen, like Chepstow, Corfe, and Kenilworth in the UK. A great time climbing up the tower and seeing all the nooks and crannies of the ruins. A medieval market was going on in the inner bailey when I was there. Great views from the towers. A wonderful place to spend the day. Also close by to Ludwigstein Castle, where you can stay in a youth hostile and hike over. Highly recommended for castle enthusiasts.See more..
4.5Schloss & Park Altenstein(37 reviews) - Wait until the castle is restored unless Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Castles
The castle and the gardens are situated in a very beautiful part of Thuringia. Already the trip by car is fun. As mentioned by others, the castle itself cannot be visited, so you have to go to take a look at het well-kept gardens around the castle or lose yourself in a powerful walk in the woods of the park enclosing the castle. For those who like trees: the lawn between the gate and the house contains some dozens of different trees ! For those who like a long walk with some height difference: the park is your place to be. Composer Brahms very often stayd in the castle, so in the gate house is a rather poor exhibition referring to that.See more..
Our local relatives drove us there. It’s a very beautiful place and quiet too. No crowds as at other, more “touristy” places. Unfortunately we were too late to get inside, but enjoyed the best afternoon views of the Saale river valley. See more..

4.5Schloss Burgk(18 reviews) - Beautiful view and castle, improvable for artlovers Monday: Castles
The castle is impressive and pictoresque, in a natural landscape surrounded by forests. There is no so much remaining from the oldest history of the castle, and all the panels are only in German. It was possible available a printed guide in english. The chapel, one of the most important space of the castle (or at least how it sounded from the guide), was unfortunately closed. Only the "most important" rooms and paintings seemed to be carefully looked after. There were paintings with evident and serious detachments! Definitely improvable if you love to admire more than the landscapeSee more..

4.5Oberes Schloss(17 reviews) - Architectural Highlight of Greiz Castles
We visited this palace several times already. It is a good place to go when you are interested in history and architecture as each sovereign added a piece of architectural style of the time he reigned. You can either discover it by a guided tour (including the visit of the tower building and a hidden well) or you visit the museum only. The guided tour is not available daily. So you need to check with the Tourist Information. Inside the palace/castle we really liked the interactive exhibition as you can skate on a skateboard through the history and collect points, you can click on several exhibits to hear about the history or watch a 3D movie. It is truly a hidden gem that is worth being discovered. Don’t miss the double chapel, one of only a few in Germany.See more..
4.0Veste Heldburg(15 reviews) - Special castle Monday: Castles
I grew up closeby and until the curtain came down, no tourist could come here. Still today there are only few and you will feel far off the beaten track. Nice views over the countryside and well reconstructed after a large fire in the 1980s. Closeby is the lost village of Billmuthausen directly at the old borderline, if you are more interested in the most recent history.See more..

4.5Schloss Und Park Kochberg(14 reviews) - Kleinod für Goethe-Liebhaber Temporarily closed - Closed until Mar 20, 2023 Spent 2-3 hours Castles
Located 35 km south of Weimar, the former country estate of the Von Stein family gained widespread fame with Goethe’s growing affection for Charlotte von Stein and his frequent visits there between 1775 and 1788. The castle and park of the feudal estate have been preserved in almost original condition. A special highlight is the Liebhabertheater, a small theatre built around 1800 which is still used as a performance venue today. The castle restaurant invites visitors to enjoy fine meals in a historical atmosphere. The castle park is open all year round.See more..

See more..

4.0Schloss und Park Ettersburg(9 reviews) - Great place to stay just a few kilometers outside Weimar Monday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Castles • Parks
Ever since Ettersburg Castle and its park grounds were built at the beginning of the 18th century, the estate was frequently used by the ducal family of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach as a hunting manor and favoured summer residence. Anna Amalia regularly invited her close circle of poets and artists to join her there. The spacious landscaped park with its cultivated grounds and so-called “Pückler-Schlag” is a jewel of garden landscaping.See more..
We arrived to Kranichfeld from Weimar. The train ride takes about 1 hour. The Oberschloss was an inexpected discovery. It boasts spectacular panoramic views of Kranichfeld and surrounding hills. Each step of the Fatty Tower staircase bears the name of its sponsor. Exceptionally interesting exhibition is dedicated to the castle's complicated history, richly illustrated with fotos. The medieval castle was gutted by fire in 1934. Transferred into the ownership of Nazi SS Heinrich Himmler, the castle was partially rebuilt by inmates of the Buchenwald concentration camp. Today the castle today is a maze of rooms. Highlights: the White Lady room in the basement, a tiny wood panelled room over the Entrance gate and ''LeckArsch'' on the outer wall.See more..
5.0Sommerpalais(7 reviews) - Where The Princes of Reuss Stayed during Summer: Awesome! Monday: Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • Castles
We visited the beautifully renovated Sommerpalais Greiz (Summer Palace) in different seasons. The palace of the former princes of Reuss is situated in the lush green English-like Greizer Park and it is already from outside quite impressive. Inside there is a vast book and copperplate collection as well as a collection of historical and modern satirical cartoons (the biggest collection of its kind in Germany!). When we walked through the Beletage and looked at the stucco, textile wall covers and furniture we really felt what it was like to live here. The entry fee of 4 EUR/person is more than okay. When you purchase the Museumskarte you can visit all 3 palaces. Have a walk through Greizer Park, an English landscape park with a huge collection of plants and trees. It is simply beautiful. There is a floral clock, a lake, flowers, birds and much more. During the summer months the little cafe next to the palace is open. We had a coffee and a cake there and enjoyed the view. Do not miss the so called Luftbrücke (Aeral Bridge) that got its name as it was always taken down in autumn and re-erected in spring. It was as invisible as air to the locals in wintertime :) Hint: we think Sommerpalais is closed on Mondays but please double-check with the Tourist Information or online.See more..

See more..
See more..

4.5Altstadt Greiz(4 reviews) - A Must For Architecture Lovers Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • Castles • Churches & Cathedrals
We visited Greiz several times and we really enjoyed not only the beautiful location in a valley but also the architecture mix. Neo Classicism is to be found around the Lower Palace (Unteres Schloss) and the neighbouring school and Town Church "St Mary", Art Noveau/Art Deco buildings are to see along Thomasstr. and the market square (Town Hall is Neo Classicism again as much as we know) and Baroque and Romanesque in parts of the Upper Palace (Oberes Schloss). Do not forget to have a walk into Newtown (Neustadt) as it is a"Gründerzeit" quarter, small but beautiful with many restored buildings. There is also the possibility to book a guided tour (sometimes themed tours) through Greiz. The Tourist Information can help you with that. We clicked on 1-2 hrs to visit, but that doesnt include visits to Lower and Upper Palace as well as Sommerpalais and/or Greizer Park. When you take all on your list you will certainly need a day or so (depending on how fast you walk).See more..
