Perfume River, Thua Thien - Hue Province, Vietnam

3.5 (2.242 reviews) Spent Ranking #21 in Hue Bodies of Water

i did not smell the perfume.

The river is 80 kms long and before reaching Hue it passes through forests with aromic plants and supposed to have a special aroma as it passes through the city, but i think those days have long gone. However there are pleasant boat trips on the river but unfortunately we were unable to do this because of the miserable weather. However there are many interesting buildings, parks by the river and you can also see the boats going up and down, as well as fishermen in their smaller boats.

River serene and peaceful but a bit boring these days.Booked a boat for a private sundown cruise at my hotel, for 3.
Very inexpensive and even included free pickup at the hotel. Only a 15 walk from the boat dock, we were tired of the heat and humidity. A free transfer sounded too good to be true. It was. After 45 minutes, they informed us sorry, no pick up today so we walked for 20 minutes. Boat workers stared at us and finally one of them waved us over to one boat, which had exactly 1 folding chair inside the boat! One asked to see where the life vests were stored; there weren't any, not one. So the man crawl over other boats and get 3 for our boat. Well, by now the sun was done. So we chugged slowly down river about 30 minutes, then headed back. The only excitement was getting to a bridge with a light show. It's such a sleepy town little is actually happening on the river. Apparently, reliance on river transport has been replaced by trucks and cars on new roads. in the past, this river was the heart of the city but no longer. Still, it was so inexpensive I recommend it on a day when you need to relax for a couple of hours just insist on some comfortable seating outside and in. PS - One feature was the pile of things that appeared for sale (shirts, shorts, scarves, pants, etc. -- tons); which were very reasonably priced, at least for the local person who was traveling with us. He got lots of things to take 'home' to his family for the coming New Year holiday ("Tet"). But boy did he bargain the lady down on the prices! Not sure a tourist would be so lucky.

Dragon Boat on the Perfume River
A nice clear day activity. These long, about 30 feet, narrow covered boats going up and down the Perfume River gave us tourists a break from the crowded sites in town. Snacks and tea were served while we were traveling and of course there were items to purchase - all VERY well priced; art work, prints, crafts, silk pajamas, etc. A family lives in the rear 1/3 of the boat.
