The Oldest Continuous Operating Library in Texas

The Eugene Clark Library located in Lockhart Texas is the oldest continuous operating library in Texas. The picture you see is the Library that was donated to the city in 1899 by Dr Eugene Clark a local physician. It contains a Lyceum and stage where President Harding once spoke. He spiral staircase located inside going to the second story is unique. The second story is where to local book club meets and the furniture is original. Several years ago, in order to raise money for the library, the librarian went to the top and stayed there day and night until the funds were raised. You can read of her exploits in the book published called, "The Looney Librarian" This is now the adult library with the children's library located next door in another historical building. A must see if you are in Lockhart, "The BBQ Capital of Texas.

This is the REAL oldest continuously operating Library in Texas
The staff here is among the friendliest and most helpful anywhere. Others are friendly & helpful but the staff here, in my opinion, is the very, very best.. Established in 1899 and dedicated in 1900, this is the true oldest continuously operating library in Texas. It is not the Rosenberg Library which is what comes up when I "google" oldest library in Texas. The Dr. Eugene Clark is the true oldest continuously operating library in Texas. I live just outside of Lockhart and use this library on a regular basis. We probably also have the most hard-headed city council in the state. But seriously, we are the oldest and the best.

Wonderful legacy, excellent craftsmanship demonstrated in architechture
The library is a neat attraction for architecture lovers (who hopefully will visit the courthouse, theater, and jail as well). The stained glass windows are gorgeous. There are displays and antiques throughout. There is a lovely desk at the base of the stairwell. Though the spiral staircases are no longer accessible to the public, the second floor is reachable through other access points.
