Davis Mountain Scenic Loop, Texas, United States

4.5 (111 reviews) Spent Ranking #5 in Fort Davis Scenic Drives

Awesome landscape

Coming up from Marfa, we made a left turn onto Texas 166, which winds first west and then north. A right turn at Texas 118 sends you back to Fort Davis. The loop is roughly 75 miles in length, and at a leisurely pace with occasional stops for taking photos will take about 2 hours. If you plan on having a picnic or taking a hike, add more time accordingly. The scenery is majestic, and as is always the case in the desert, best viewed in the early morning or late afternoon, when the play of light and shadow across the landscape is at its most dramatic. Of course, you will want to take the usual precautions when traversing a barren stretch of real estate: start out with a full tank of gas, and have plenty of water on hand.

    Beautiful snowy drive
The main objective of my son and I was to backpack in Big Bend, and the Davis Mountain Loop was a last-minute, unplanned detour. We are so glad that we chose to drive the loop. It was early December, and everything was snow covered - trees, mountains, etc. It was breathtaking! We've been to all 50 states and most Canadian provinces, so we have seen our share of beautiful landscapes, but this is Texas. Although we've lived in Texas for many years, this was the first time we saw the beautiful mountainous area of Texas. Wow!

    Fun drive
Great drive! Wish we had been in our Corvette instead of our Jeep!! There is NO cell service most of the loop so know where you are going in advance bc google maps won’t work. Have a full tank of gas. Few food options when you hit Fort Davis.
