Dungun Great Market, Terengganu, Malaysia

3.5 (20 reviews) Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #4 in Dungun District Farmers Markets

Dungun night market

We had arranged an evening at the night market and to basically get away from the tourists who were staying at the Tanjong Jara resort; dreary, dull people (lol). The place is about 15 minutes drive and was pleasantly surprised how much was on offer. There were clothes of all varieties and styles but just so you know, what may look good there might not look when you bring it home #justsaying! Just follow your nose or the locals as that lead us to where the food was.. NOW WE ARE TALKING!!! The range of food was divine and absolutely delightful. We tasted literally every dish (well to a point lol) and the price is very cheap indeed, compared to our resort. It’s literally no fuss attitude and the locals were very friendly indeed. You feel really safe there and they literally don’t hassle you like other places.

Go for the food and the people
Top tips: take small bank notes, food is cheap so small notes better; head for the food you will be able to smell it, portions are generous and food generally given in tubs and with picks to help you eat it; ask if you don't understand, usually one person speaks enough English; once you have eaten your fill you can head back up to the main street, if you cross over you can find a shopping street with Pizza Hut, Domino's, supermarket, chemist etc. But do go, we went yesterday and people are so lovely, food was fabulous and so cheap and lovely just seeing a normal town. Definitely recommend.

    Sample local food
Lots and lots of local food from Terengganu state to try here. All sorts of stalls selling all sorts from noodles, fried chicken and seafood. A lot of the food is given wrapped up in plastic bags, presumably the locals take it home to eat. Would have been nice if paper plates were available but it may not be the case at these types of market. Every Thursday evening, 60 - 90 mins is plenty
