Great time in the Medina with Local guide!
We had a fantastic time exploring Tangier with a local (I think by the name of Hashim, I wish I knew how to spell his name- he was wonderful) He was friendly, patient, funny, and knowledgeable- and he took us to the most AMAZING restaurant. We would have gotten so lost in the beautiful but confusing maze of Tangier if not for his help, so I would recommend anyone visiting the city to call him at 00 212 698 3813. He showed us not only the touristy destinations, but the lesser known local gems of the city that we (a group of 5 American tourists) would not have been able to find if not for him. As for the Medina, it has incredible handcrafted goods sold for very cheap. Leather goods, art, delicious food, and creams/oils that would cost 10 times as much in the United States. Everybody was incredibly friendly and I would highly recommend trying the orange juice just about anywhere in Tangier.

Favorite international experience!
Favorite international experience! Review of Medina of Tangier Pending review I absolutely loved the medina in Tangier! The locals are all so warm and welcoming. The shops are stunning. I've never seen such displays of color. I especially love the shoes baskets of spices and huge watermelon. Beside the market I also visited the Casbah, downtown plaza, American Legion and the Cave of Hercules on my tour day. In fact, I loved my experience so much, and while there, heard about this other place called the Blue City (Chefchaouen), so I hired Nabil to take me there 2 days later for another day trip. Though traveling alone, I felt safer than when alone in the US. My tour guide Nabil was very gracious in every way. He is obviously well known and respected by so many in the community, so I felt that I could trust him. He saw to my needs, even my quirky ones like allergies/dining, and helped me to barter for better prices (the shoes! and some silver rings). He explained many things about the local history and muslim religion so I better understood our different cultures. Had the time of my life and will return! A Unique Mix
Wandering through the medina allows one to step back in time, getting lost among the streets that have been winding through this old city for centuries. In Morocco’s efforts to modernize and upgrade, many ongoing improvements can be seen. If you enter without a guide, be prepared to be approached constantly. Some may even start walking with you, whether you invite them to do so or not. It may seem rude at first, but be firm and clear if you do not want to have any of these experiences. To make everything simpler and more enjoyable, I highly recommend booking a guide before you arrive. We were able to experience the medina with and without a guide, and the difference was night and day. With the guide, we were able to enjoy the experience with almost no “offers.” When we tried it on our own, we could hardly take 25 steps between “offers.” Having said all that, it was an amazing experience!
