Thong Nai Pan Yai Beach, Surat Thani Province, Thailand

4.5 (601 reviews) Spent Ranking #3 in Ko Pha-Ngan Beaches

Very quiet and down to earth

We loved this area, much more reasonably priced and less developed than Noi or some of the west coast. Some resorts & shops have closed down, which is sad for the owners. Beautiful beach, great places to stay, lovely locals,

Its a "dont miss"place, but try to stay for a few days (or weeks!)
Totally honestly, when we first arrived here we were not impressed. It seemed a bit touristy. However, thank goodness we spent 5 weeks here, because we have come to love it, and having visited many of the old Phangan style beaches it rates very highly on our list. We spent a lot of time at Pan Noi, but grew to love Pan Yai for its swimming and its delightful temple. For eating, we would recommend Pan Noi at the moment. The Food Hall (Boonmee) at Ban Pan Noi was excellent with each dish cooked to your order from fresh ingredients in the 60-200 baht range per dish, and western food was available, my vegetarian husband was very well catered for too, and the Thai menus were off the scale delicious. We ended up eating every night at The Tasty Corner food stall, as her cooking is reliably fabulous, and delivered with charm, but everyone is punching way over their weight at this clean and delicious community eatery. If you want a serene splash out, visit Sand in My Shoes, tasteful decor and peaceful ambient beachside restaurant you'll feel that you have discovered a secluded paradise. Its run by a lovely lady (Ja). The staff are unobtrusive and professional Do not miss the awesome Wat (Temple) close to Pan Yai school. with hand painted murals and the friendliest welcome from the resident monk. One of the monks here is an engineer from Bangkok, and if you are lucky, you'll get a tour of the compound, and see the extraordinary and huge stupa, being constructed from beer bottles.

    Worth the Drive
We came upon this beach by just riding around the island on the scooter. It was a very nice beach. There were plenty of place to eat. The waves were low and water was very nice. It would be a good place for smaller children. On the day we were there it was pretty busy. If you are not eating at a restaurant or at a resort be prepare to pay to use a restroom, if spending the day there it will add up. It is worth the drive to get there.
