Fantastic walk with lovely cafe half way around

This lake has a circular walk with fantastic views. The complete walk takes less than 2 hours. If you don’t want to walk too far, you can travel back from the far side of the lake on a pretty boat (8 Euros adult fare). There is also quaint cafe on the far side of the lake “See Wiese”. We stopped there for some tea and cake (also serves gluten free cake!), very tasty. Great afternoon out.

    A Gem
The lake is a gem squeezed in between two impressive mountains, the significant Loser and the steel Tresselwand. It has a nice view of the Dachstein glacier in the far background. There is a ca. 8 km easy walking trail around the lake. The village of Altaussee is picturesque with its traditional wooden houses and characteristic architecture. It is much more laid-back than for example St. Wolfgang and does not try hard to sell you things that you do not need. The lake is on the cold side but in recent years has been warm enough to swim in for much of the summer. Unfortunately, recently one of Austria's richest man has built some oversized holiday apartment complex and another one a tacky restaurant, so I recommend that you visit before outsiders manage to ruin the place.

One of the most beautiful places in Europe
The lake is surrounded by a rind of high mountains and a pitoresque village. You can swim and you can also climb the mountains a have a great view over the very centre of Austria
