Prominent castle with rare African collection.
We were anxious to visit this 16th C castle with such a commanding position dominating this city of 25,000. After paying 3 Euros each and seeing the 2 connecting period rooms, we were escorted up to its 3rd floor to begin our tour. Noteworthy here was the collection of 16th C frescoes behind the chapel. With the 2nd floor devoted to different forms of modern art, we were about to conclude this a very average museum. But then on the lower floor we came upon several rooms of the most unusual collection of African Art; puppets, drums & musical instruments, masks, weapons, gourds and bowls. How Slovenia ended up with these artifacts collected in the mid 1900’s by a Czech national is an interesting story. We are happy to have seen this world class exhibit.

Castle with wiew
Velenje has just one old and significant building. It is castle, a small fortress, developed from medieval ages to Renaissance and Baroque. Beside the view you have different collections of the local museum in the castle. An old local inn is the most interesting for me. You have many steps to climb up from the modern city. Entrance fee is low.

Nice little castle - interesting variety of exhibits
This is a small castle in a small town. They have a few small exhibits including modern art, African art, a small chapel, mastodon room, and a WW2 memorial. The castle itself is nicely maintained and the guide was very enthusiastic to show us the exhibits. A nice way to spend a few hours if in the area, but not something I would go out of my way for.
