Beautiful

Stortorget was the absolute centre in the Old Stockholm, what is now known as Gamla Stan. The brick buildings that one can see today are from late Medieval time. I think it is marvelous, but I am biased since many of my ancestors were tradesmen, mayors and city court jurors in Stockholm and many lived around Stortorget. I have never tried a city tour though.

    Cannonballs in wall
Stortorget is the oldest public square in Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s Old Town. The name translates to “Big Square” in English, but it is actually one of the smallest Old Town squares in Europe. Several of the buildings which sit around the square date back to the Middle Ages even though the colorful front facades make them look much newer. Don’t overlook the cannonballs stuck in the walls of a couple of the buildings. One is above the Stortorgskällaren street sign of apartment number seven and three more are in the wall of the adjacent building. Legend has it that the first cannonball was shot during the 16th century at King Cristian II during the Liberation War (a civil war which ended the union between Sweden, Norway, and Denmark). The cannonball missed and lodged into the wall, where it has remained ever since. Another explanation is that they were actually built into the facade during a renovation in 1795. (PaM)

    Pretty area…
Maybe Stockholm is prettier in the winter with snow and ice, but this square and the area around it is full of beautiful boutiques, craft shops, secondhand shops, little cafes etc. and the architecture & colour on the square itself is a delight. I’m not quite sure why people would give it a bad review…granted there are souvenir shops too but it’s a major tourist area in a big capital city and we thoroughly enjoyed seeing every part of Gamla Stan, it’s beautiful and full of character with its cobbled streets and wooden horses!
