A must when in Stockholm

The Stockholm City Hall is one of Sweden's most famous buildings, and one of the capital's most visited tourist attractions. It houses offices for 200 people including the Municipal Council, and is also famous for its grand ceremonial halls and unique art pieces. The Stockholm City Hall is the venue of the Nobel Prize banquet held on 10 December each year. Between May and September, the City Hall Tower offers a breathtaking view of Stockholm.

    Visit City Hall!
We did a private tour of city hall, and highly recommend either a private tour or the public tours in English. You'll see the upstairs hall all in gold and the "blue" hall where the Nobel prize dinner is held. We had an excellent guide who shared interesting information, which made this more special than just going on our own.

    Definitely worth a tour
We had no trouble getting into both the City Hall tour and the tower lookout, even though it was peak season (late June), and I recommend you do both – book the tower while waiting for the tour. It needs to be booked from across the courtyard from the main hall, not at the same place. We relied on the booking staff to advise the best time for the tower, based on our City Hall tour schedule, and we basically walked from one to the other seamlessly. The highlight of the tour is undoubtedly the gold room (worth doing just for this), but the entire tour is interesting and run at a good pace. For the tower, there is an elevator that takes you most of the way up but since we had a full group I elected to go by the stairs rather than wait for the elevator. As well as the viewpoints from the top, there are a number of displays in the upper rooms of the tower (also after you exit the elevator) but don’t spend too long here or you may not have very long at the actual tower viewpoint, as the tower visits are carefully timed and you have to be back on ground in time for the next tour. Easy to get to either by walking from Gamla Stan or taking the metro to Radhuset Station.
