Hierve el Agua, Southern Mexico, Mexico

4.5 (2.815 reviews) Saturday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent Ranking #13 in Southern Mexico Geologic Formations

Great day trip!

Located about 40 miles from Oaxaca, Hierve el Agua makes a great day trip from the city. Here, you'll see two waterfall-like rock formations which were formed when mineral-rich water spilled over the cliffs and trickled down the mountainside. At the top, you can take a dip in the man-made pools while enjoying awe-inspiring views. While they're not thermal springs, the waters were said to have healing properties due to their high mineral content. The easiest way to get here is via a private tour from Oaxaca. It's recommended to arrive early for thinner crowds. – Tripadvisor

    Great day trip!
Beautiful spot near Oaxaca city. The pools are amazing, but you have to arrive early (we hired a taxi for the day per hour at 220 pesos per hour) so leave Oaxaca city by 8am so you avoid the insane crowds. We hired a local guide for a 1.5hr guided trek to get some great views and gave a tip at the end (700 pesos for 3 of us). Bring your bathing suit and a towel if you want to swim and be sure to wear sunblock bc the sun is very intense at that altitude.

    Beat the crowds
Located 65km Southeast of Oaxaca and featuring natural mineral springs and white mineral formations resembling frozen waterfalls, Hierve El Agua is a big ticket item on most itineraries in Oaxaca. My wife and I recently visited and here are a few of my thoughts on those considering a visit here. * This is a highly popular activity and the site isn’t huge. It did become fairly clogged with visitors by the time we left (11am) and I felt this detracted significantly from its natural beauty. With this in mind I would encourage someone to try to create an arrangement in which they arrive early (it opens 0730am) to beat the crowds - we used Coyote Adventuras with this in mind and had a good experience. * The pools are actually quite cold to swim in which surprised me a bit. * There are actually two waterfalls here - the first is cascada chica which is the small one that produces the water for the mineral pools. The larger is known as cascada grande and this is visible in the distance from the mineral pools. You can take a small hike to the base of these waterfalls for some impressive pictures (see below). Please note if you are not doing a tour you will need a local guide to take you on this. It was a part of our tour. * There are change rooms at the pools. * Like any big ticket tourist attraction there are the usual hordes of food and drink vendors. Overall a decent tourist attractions but as I said, take some consideration on your arrival time.
