Ljotipollur Lake, South Region, Iceland

4.5 (38 reviews) Spent Ranking #3 in Landmannalaugar Bodies of Water

Beautiful crater

Ljotipollur is a explosion crater lake in the south highlands, situated in the southernmost crater in the Veidivotn fissure system. Strangely enough, Ljotipollur's name means 'Ugly Puddle', since this crater anything but, being beautifully red with the deep trout-filled lake at its bottom and high edges on its sides.

    Beautiful crater
We saw quite a few crater lakes in Iceland and this one I would rate as my favourite. The colours are so vivid and we were really lucky that we were there on a sunny day so we got to see it in it's full glory. There is also a great view of the surroundings from the top of the rim of the lake. Unfortunately you can only access this lake via an F road so you have to either hire the appropriate vehicle or take a tour to Landmannalaugar as most tours stop here.

    Ljotipollur means "ugly puddle"
...and it's revolting. We parkt the jeep, got out for our photo-op and I promptly threw up. It's a "maar" geologic lake, a lake in a crater made from a huge explosion; the steep sides are blood red rust stained and black tar stained and there are patches of nauseous florescent green mosses, it's just plain creepy. Everyone says it's beautiful!!!! I didn't get it, and I couldn't get back on the road fast enough ;-D
