Worth the quick trip

The LAVA Centre features an interactive exhibition exploring the art and science of geology and the volcanic systems in Iceland. Information from the past century’s eruptions demonstrates just how strong the presence of volcanoes has in contemporary Iceland. Feel the forces of nature as you experience an earthquake and see the Fiery Heart of Iceland, a 12 m high structure simulating the Mantle plume and the magma flow underneath Iceland. In an educational learning centre, you can explore the wonders of volcanoes and earthquakes through interactive computers and there’s also a cinema auditorium where visitors can see the magnificence of volcanic eruptions in HD 4K. Please note that the last entry into the exhibition is at 16:30 and the movie is at 16:40. The exhibition closes at 17:00.

One of your few Icelandic indoor options
While the movie was fine, a trip to Iceland is typically filled with outdoor activities and sites. The Lava Center is an indoor space serves well on rainy days for a break from the weather. We however were there on a beautiful day so very little time was spent there. If your in the area and need something out of the weather, this is a good stop. If it’s nice out, I may recommend skipping it for another waterfall etc.

    Quick stop
Very friendly man greeted us at the entrance and made our 11 year old feel welcomed by giving him a 'special' pencil. The museum is interactive and set up very nicely. It's not very big, which works well with a kid. They have a nice film (with no narrator) in one of their rooms. Their gift shop seemed to have some really nice things. The cafe wasn't open while we were there. The restrooms were very clean.
