Words (and even pictures) don't truly capture the beauty and grandeur that you experience as you travel through Spearfish Canyon. The road winds through the canyon, so you have the hills/cliffs on both sides as you drive through. Lots of rock formations as well as various other natural sights to see. There are some spots along the road where you can pull over and park, so you can get some better views (i.e., sometimes difficult for the driver to see everything while driving). They also have some spots along the road, where you can hike a path or visit a particular site. For example, there are a couple waterfalls that you can visit. There is no charge to drive through the canyon, and the drive only takes about an hour from start to finish, unless you decide to make additional stops along the way. Highly recommend!

    Beautiful Canyon!
We enjoyed the drive through Spearfish Canyon stopping along the route to "hike" to Roughlock and Spearfish Falls. We pulled over to get a better look at Bridal Veil Falls, as well. Imagine your wife seeing a sign on the side of the road pointing out parking for Devil's Bathtub. Of course, I said "Let's check it out!" The parking lot was packed with no one in sight. My husband, son, and I begin walking along the creek on a narrow path. We come across others that are returning from their trek. Telling us it's well worth it. We keep going along, into the forest, up, down, and around trees, rocks, and cliff faces. Clouds loom over the canopy. We keep going without knowing what lies ahead. Soon lots of people are coming back in swimwear with towels and such. Thunder and sprinkles, but we have come a long way crossing the creek many times on rocks and trees. It has become a path to conquer. We take cover under trees here and there and finally an overhang in the cliff wall. When the rain stops, we find Devil's Bathtub empty of people. What a wonderful hike and a beautiful path. Take water shoes if you can and plan for several hours! I will say hiking isn't necessary to enjoy Spearfish Canyon or the falls, but it added to our experience.
