Sunset in Oia, South Aegean, Greece

A memory for the rest of your life

My wife and I rented a scooter and got to Oia around 4PM. It was a sunny day with a lot of wind, which I heard is something quite normal in Santorini. We got to the Old Castle around 5:30PM and it got crowded very quick. Close to the sunset time, a guy started playing saxofone and it was very nice. The view is mesmerizing, something that will never forget.

    Beautiful
The views are amazing and you can get similar views from Thira if you v visit the three bells of Fira. pyrgos also has a beautiful sunset. Oia was very crowded and we stood there for an hour to make sure we had a good view. There is a photo spot which is a little past the square on your left - going down a little on sunset blvd before you get to the main sunset view point. There was a line to take pictures there - blue some, in background. Lolita's gelatos before the main square has the best Gelato we had in all of Greece and Turkey. We didn't get a chance to try Scala's restaurant which was highly recommended for the local fried tomatoes and Santorini salad. Recommend you exchange currency at the airport or in Athens - used HSBC ATM which had the best rate and no fees. Other ATM rates and fees were a ripoff at least on the smaller Islands. A lot of the places didn't accept Credit cards. Enjoy!

The sunsets here are just breath taking.
We visited Oia to watch the sunset when we were in Santorini and the view blew our minds. There are plenty of places to watch the sunset in Santorini and if you want to view it from Oia, I would get here with at least 45 minutes to spare. Even longer if you want to view from a comfy restaurant seat with a glass of something in your hand to welcome the sight of what can only be described as an "awe inspiring" sight. However, whatever you do. Do not book a tour to see it. They obviously cannot guarantee the sunset and you will be disappointed you paid all that money to see something you can see anywhere. If you are on Santorini, get the public bus. It's genuinely the easiest way to get around the island and you could save a small fortune.
